Show SPANISH FORK Covering what matters most A8 • WEDNESDAY, APRIL 22, 2009 Kyuki-do state championships held On Saturday March 2 1 , 2009 the 11th annual Utah Kyuki-do Kids Championship was held in Pleasant Grove. Tournaments like this give students the chance to test their skills against others of the same age and ability level and the students look forward to this opportunity all year long. In attendance were over 40 black belt judges from all over Utah, including the vice president of the American Kyuki-do Federation Master Royal West. The students compete in kata forms and sparring. In forms each person is judged by their skill and precision on a scale of 1-10 by five black belt judges. In the sparring competition, students wear protective gear and are matched up against other students of the same age and belt level. There are five black belt judges that oversee the sparring with one in each comer and one higher ranking black belt in the middle. The sparring matches last two minutes with four 30-second rounds. When a point is made, the tournament is stopped and the judges award the point to the deserving student. When the round is over at the end of two minutes, whoever has the most points wins the match. Most of the time first and third place are separated by only one tenth of a point. Maple Mountain Martial Arts had more students compete than any other studio in Utah. Maple Mountain Martial Arts has been a part of the Spanish Fork community since 1997.
