It is hard, sometimes tedious work and can include the rather uncomfortable problems of being stepped on, kicked, run over, etc., but in the end the exhibitors have learned a lot of lessons that can be used in regular life. ••• Correction: Acouple of weeks ago I wrote of Verla Richardson's visit to her daughter's, Jackie, home in Puerto Rico and I misnamed Jackie's husband's name — she is married to Kevin Mortensen. It is appreciated that when mistakes occur, correction are made known in order that the proper information can be given. Have a happy April! There and Back Again Shirlene R. Ottesen Your chuckle for the week: A woman walked up to a little old man in a rocking chair on his porch. "I couldn't help noticing how happy you look," she said ''What's the secret to your long, happy life.?" "I smoke three packs of cigarettes a day," he said. "I also drink a case of whiskey a week, eat fatty foods, and never exercise." "That's amazing," the woman said. "How old are you?" "Twenty-six," he answered "Happy Easter" to everyone! Another month, another holiday. We just go from one to another, don't we? I like it when Easter falls in April. Every few years or so it comes in March and it just doesn't seem like it should be in that month. The stores are filled with bags of colored, plastic eggs that can he filled with treats. I have often wondered how do they make those? Then there are the marshmallow "peeps." You know, those colored bunnies or chicks that come in pink, white and now they come in purple. I recently noticed that now you can buy "mini peeps." And then there are the jelly bean eggs. I don't know how they do it, but the candy companies seem to be doing okay in this "recession." I'm sure their costs of doing business have gone up, too, but there seems to be plenty of candy. 1 don't know, maybe it's because of tradition or it's comfort food, but there is always • that tempting candy. I suppose many of the communities are planning an Easter egg hunt which is always fun for the children. When our children were little, 1 decided it was easier to stay home and have our own egg hunt. It was too hard to keep track of five small children among the many that went to the activity in town. Besides, it really wasn't much of a hunt when the eggs are _ laying right on top of the grass. We had lots of places to hide eggs on the farm. Inside and outside. In the rose bushes, in the coal shed, in a bale of hay, in the jockey box in the car and even in the outhouse. One year, I remember, it was terrible weather and so we hide all of them in the house. There were initials on the eggs so the kids knew which ones were theirs. There was one egg we didn't find for six months! Just so happened it was in a shoe in the clothes closet. A picnic on Easter is what our children looked forward to. With time so limited on a farm we didn't picnic much unless it was when we took lunch to Hy while he was working or irrigating in one of the fields. We did the "Easter Bunny" stuff on Saturday so we could remember the real meaning of Easter on Sunday. When our children were very small, we would have them put their Easter basket outside their bedroom door on Friday night with the eggs that they had colored and decorated. Then, the Easter Bunny came in the middle of the night, took their eggs to hide for the hunt and also left some treats and surprises in their baskets. I find it very interesting that children don't always remember what their mother remembers. My children probably don't remember a picnic that we had just along a roadside here in Palmyra. They helped me pack a few food items which included a can of pork and beans, some cookies and Kool-aid punch. We took some hot dogs and the usual catsup and mustard. After we found a good spot, they helped find sticks and twigs to build a small fire and we roasted the hot dogs. Nothing fancy, but it was good. A quiet roadside, a blue sky and happy, excited children.
