Taylorsville had the Skyhawks' number, getting the 7-0 shutout. Salem Hills' Kallee Wilson (above), Lindsay Stevens and April Holdaway played a strong defensive game. The JV team fared better, but still lost 3-1. Hailey Ingram scored in the 37th minute of the second half, and sweeper Brianna Wilding and keeper Kaylyn Sly were defensive standouts. SF soccer team trounces Grand On Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, the Spanish Fork Lady Dons soccer team traveled to Moab for a match with Grand County High School. Although a smaller school. Grand has had better results than Spanish Fork in their past few seasons, and Coach Gillie was expecting to face a challenging opponent. Unfortunately for the Red Devils, they are not at the same competitive level they have been before. The biggest challenge for the visiting Dons was the heal. Senior midfielder Brooke Steinkopf opened the scoring for Spanish Fork in the second minute of the game on an assist from Jennifer Youd. The same two connected again just three minutes later. Midway through the first half the Dons put the game out of reach with three goals in three minutes as Kaylee Beckstrom notched her first goal of the season and Courtney Acosta put two in the net. The remainder of the half, the Lady Dons used good passing and runs up the side to run the clock out. The second half began much like the first for Spanish Fork. Jennifer Noguera and Jennifer Youd had a goal apiece in the first few minutes. Coach Gillie then pulled most of the starters off the field and asked his team to put less pressure on the Grand Defenders. Despite the restraint, Beckslrom slotted two more goals in the second half. The final tally was Spanish Fork 9 Grand County 0. The Spanish Fork defenders, led by Ashley Shelley and Jessie Anderson, had an excellent game. Their calm and deliberate play on the ball set up the Dons offense time again and again. Shea Johnson and Lyndsey Healey split time as goalkeepers for Spanish Fork's second shutout in a row. Prior to the game start, Coach Gillie announced the team captains for the 2008 squad: Jennifer Youd, Jessie Anderson, Britney Jones and Ashley Shelley. Unfortunately, after a hard-fought battle, the Lady Dons came away with a defeat to the powerful Wolverines, losing 4-0. Hunler took a quick lead in the first minute of the game. Coach Dennis Gillie expected the Dons to respond to that goal. But, after the first period, it didn't happen. After making some adjustments in the first half. Hunter slowly and methodically finished their attacks. In second half, the Dons' reserves played with great enthusiasm, but were not able to score. This is Spanish Fork's first loss of the season, and while slill a loss, lessons were learned. The junior varsity played with great enthusiasm, earning their first win of the season by a score of 6-2. Scoring for the Lady Don's were Bobbe Graham. Lisa Rawlc. Brittany Jones, Shea Johnson, Kaylee Beckstrom and Patti Ferguson. Courtney Acosta has two assists. The next action for the Lady Don's will be on Wednesday, Aug. 27. with a home match against North Sanpete at 4 p.m. Namon Bills / Spanish Fork News BALL HANDLING: Senior forward Jennifer Youd controls the ball, above.
