DISTRICT SCIENCE FAIR WINNERS: Three students from Canyon Elementary won at the Nebo district science fair and will be going on to participate in the science fair at BYU. Canyon receives grant Angie Perkins, fourth-grade teacher at Canyon Elementary, received a grant for a listening center through the Nebo Education Foundation. "I am ecstatic about the money to buy books on tape," said Ms. Perkins. "Having a listening center provides students with another way to hear correct fluent reading. It also provides students with great literature, helps students build vocabulary as well as comprehension skills and assists the teacher while he/she is working with other groups at the same time. The students will also benefit by spending their center time engaged in reading good literature rather than in other activities that may not be as meaningful. I thank the foundation for being here for us as teachers." The Nebo Education Foundation meets the first Tuesday of every month at 6:30 a.m. Nielsen named Instructional Leader of the Year for 07-08 DeAnn Nielsen, Canyon Elementary Principal, was named Instructional Leader of the Year by the Utah Association of Elementary Principals for 2007-2008. Mrs. Nielsen knows the importance of visiting teachers' classrooms often and to informally observe instruction and student learning. She has several items that she-likes to handdeliver to teachers and students in their classrooms. She delivers a school weekly calendar, students' birthday pencils, teachers' check stubs and other notes and messages. , Canyon Elementary's DeAnn Nielsen CRT scores have always been on or above district and state averages. Because T DR. SEUSS DAY: Students at Canyon Elementary had fun dressing up as their favorite Dr. Seuss characters in celebration of Dr. Seuss Day. One of the goals of the foundation is to fund worthwhile projects in the district that provide resources to enrich student learning. The Nebo Education Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) organization created tobring businesses and donors together for the benefit of Nebo District school children. The foundation carefully manages and disperses tax deductible donations to local schools. Canyon offers chess clubs which meet three nights a week, a 4-6 grade choir, and plans to start a math lab. Before Nielsen was a principal, she was a school facilitator/teacher mentor for seven years and a district presenter for 15 years teaching workshops in the areas of science, writing and publishing, and cooperative learning.
