SFHS second at Region Debate Andrew Wilson STAFF WRITER On Saturday Feb. 23 2008, Spanish Fork High School's Debate team traveled to Highland to compete in the region tournament. held at Lone Peak High School. Spanish Fork edged Lehi by one point to lock up second place behind Lone Peak. Several members of the team also took home medals for placing on an individual basis. Team president Leanna Thompson said, "Everyone tried their hardest and we ended up having eight people get an award." Placing second at region automatically qualified the entire team to compete at the upcoming state tournament. Luke Beeston, a junior on the team said, "I'm really excited. It's going to test my limits on how well I can Lincoln Douglas debate. It's going to give me a chance to learn from the best." About debate, Luke said, "It's invigorating to know that you can argue something and get an adrenaline rush." Members of the team competed in a variety of categories. Along with three main styles, Policy, Lincoln Douglas, and Public Forum, there are also many individual events that members competed in. The rounds started early in the morning and went late into the afternoon. Between debates, the students chatted about how they were doing and prepared for their next rounds. "I think it's a great team. I think everyone works hard to try to be successful," said Leanna. The SFHS Debate team will travel to Riverton High School on March 7-8 to compete at state. Students wishing to participate in this program must first meet with the Assistant Principal over their part of the alphabet, sign forms committing them to the program and pay fees related to it. Credit Recovery runs daily from 2:45-3:45 in Room 26. The cost is $5 per class + $2 per hour of detention time owed per class. In order to participate in Credit Recovery, a student commits to daily attendance until credit has been recovered. She has 3.95 GPA, and her favorite classes are history and "any P.E. class." Shea plays on the SFHS soccer and basketball teams. On a road trip, she would listen to country and rock, and if she could go anywhere in the world, it would be to Italy. She provides service to Mrs. Creer's third grade class and also provides assistance to their library. Her job involves helping the kids with reading, writing and improving their skills. Osbom not only serves Mrs. Creer's class but also serves any other teacher that needs her help. "Being with the kids makes me happy and one of my favorite things is to be surprised with a thank you note that one of the students has left me," said Josie Osborn. "I hope to have as great of an influence on them as they do on me. Each and every one of them has impacted my life, and I wish to do the same for them.
