Show -NEWS- Spanish Fork B2 • WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2008 Covering what matters most Lady Dons stumble at AF Bryan Redd STAFF WRITER Road wins have been the strength for the Lady Dons this year. Unfortunately, Tuesday night was not a strong snowing by a talented but tentative Lady Dons team. The AF girls are the number one team in the state this year, with impressive senior talent and undefeated record. The Dons competed well and kept AF close in the opening minutes, denying their leading scorers and rebounding strong. Spanish Fork would pound the ball inside to Erin Redd, who responded with six first quarter points. At the five minute mark, the scoring machine for AF exploded, scoring 25 first quarter points. AF ran their fast break to perfection and bombed three balls, as the SF defense was slow defending the ball. American Fork led 25-10 at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Dons exploded for 20 points in the second quarter. The Dons dominated the glass with nine rebounds. Jenna Johnson scored nine points, driving to the basket and hitting free throws, Natasha Sanborn and Erin Redd combined for 11 points in the paint. The Lady Dons would limit AF to 15 points in the second quarter. The Dons would have a chance only down 10 at half time. American Fork led 40-30. The Cavewomen dominated the third quarter. The Lady Dons did not stop the AF fast break. American Fork ran a very well-balanced attack. AF shared the ball with pin point passing. The Lady Dons only scored six points in the third quarter. American Fork led 5936 at the end of three. The Lady Dons matched AF in the fourth quarter, each team scoring 10 points. Spanish Fork would not have their traditional fourth quarter push on this night, falling to AF 69^6. Leading scorer was Erin Redd with 17 points, Jenna Johnson 14, Natasha Sanborn 6, and Rachelle Remund 4. SF had 28 rebounds, 11 assist, 17 turnovers, and 6 blocks (Redd 4, Johnson 1, Nielsen 1. The Lady Dons drop to 3-3 in region play. SF junior varsity defeated AF 57-52. The SF sophomores defeated AF 48-39. Visiting Vikings down Spaniards Chad Vest STAFF WRITER The Mighty Dons looked to avenge their opening region loss to the Pleasant Grove Vikings when they fell to a buzzer beater put-back in early January. SF was 11-5, along with a 3-2 league record heading into Friday's region game. Their counterpart had been listed as a top five team since the pre-season and their 14-2 overall record (4—1 region) was quite legit. Spanish played them toe to toe for three and a half quarters, but a four-minute stretch where the Vikings went on an 18-2 run seemed to drown any hopes of another dramatic finish. The red and gray found themselves trailing by as many as 19, yet fought back late in the fourth with an impressive 13-2 run. However, PG put the pedal to the metal and coasted for a comfortable 80-65 victory. The first half of play showed an uptempo style of basketball. Both teams went scoreless for the first two minutes, but that didn't last long. At the end of the first, the score was locked at 14. A ninth-grader at Diamond Fork Jr. High, Roberts won the 100-yard men's breaststroke at region. He also took second in the 500-yard freestyle and participated on the second-place men's 200-yard freestyle relay team. He will join the rest of the relay team competing at state this weekend. Roberts' parents are Teresa and Rick Roberts of Spanish Fork. Sponsored by the Oil Change again. He knocked down a trey and dished out several assists to sharp-shooter Matt Gardner, who also connected from downtown on three attempts. Spanish came out fired up to begin the second. They forced three straight turnovers, including two steals and a dominating swat by big man Juan Vergera. The Dons' aggressive start soon resulted in a 6-0 run off of two three-point plays. Matt Gardner drove hard to the bucket, got his shot to fall and chipped in a charity at the line. The athletic Gardner was responsible for 14 first-half points, including four treys, giving the Dons a shot at an upset. The next big play came from the point man Naulu. He was found for a bring-thehouse-down trey to take a four-point lead. However, that lead soon vanished when the Vikings went on a run to grab a 31-29 lead to end the half. After an 8-2 run by PG, Vergera sparked his team with a brilliant power move in the paint to help the Dons go on a 5-0 run to get within three. Spanish soon tied it up on another trey from a sizzling Gardner. But soon after, a tornado hit and it gave the Vikings a whopping 19-point lead. Pleasant Grove went on a 14-0 run, which later ended up being an 18-2 point differential in the span of nearly four minutes. This long stretch with several turnovers and no buckets for the Dons seemed to never end. Finally, there was a glimmer of hope when SF went on a 6-0 run to force a Viking tirne-out at the three-minute mark. The Don Dome heated up when the red and gray ripped off seven more and closed the gap to a seven-point deficit. However, the visiting team continued to find high percentage shots with excellent ball movement. Spanish never quit, and only trailed by seven, with one minute remaining, but the Vikings sealed the win at the line, where they went 22/30 with their star CJ Wilcox making 11/14 from the stripe. Gardner led the Dons with 22 points (including six treys). Naulu finished with 11 points and nine assists, while Devin Nelson chipped in nine points. Vergera and Clayton had eight apiece. : Recreation Office gearing up for spring Cooper Corless recently received a property and casualty insurance license.
