Cassandra loves what she does at Utah Valley Hospital in the newborn ICU. She has had many experiences, which have included drawing blood, witnessing births, swabbing mouths and changing diapers of premature babies and many more. Although she spends most of her time in the Newborn ICU she has also had a lot of other contact with various positions in the medical field such as: Respiratory Therapist, X-Ray Technician, and even Life Flight Attendants. Although Cassandra was already sure that she wanted to be in the medical field, her experience with Utah Valley Namon Bills / Spanish Fork News RAISING FUNDS: The SFHS choirs participated in a fundraiser with the Spanish Fork News to earn money towards costumes and tour. SFHS student named national debate finalist Andrew Wilson SFHS The Spanish Fork High School debate team recently traveled to the University of Southern California to compete in the largest high school invitational national debate tournament, and the most prestigious in the nation. Schools came from all over the country to debate each other. "You get so much experience from being able to collaborate ideas with people from across the nation," said team member Shelby Randquist. The tournament lasted for three days. The students each had six debates. Those that won enough rounds advanced to the finals on the third day. Jessica Warr, Grady Harding, and Sheii Preece all received trophies for advancing to the octofinals in the Lincoln/ Douglas category. Grady Harding won his octofinal round and advanced to the quarter finals. Jessica Warr was the only member of the tournament to win all six of her preliminary rounds. She also was awarded with a trophy for taking first place in speaker points in the Courtesy photo Cassandra Pehrson Hospital only confirmed her ambition to become a NeonatologisL The medical field was an obvious choice for Cassandra, when she said, "I want to improve life, and make a difference." SFHS students slack on seatbelts In August students were observed for seat belt use when they were entering and exiting the Spanish Fork High School parking lot. It was found this year that 60 percent of students were buckled up. The number of students wearing seat belts has gone down significantly since spring of 2007, when the percentage was 73. Spanish Fork High students need to work on bringing this number back up! In 2005, teenage drivers were involved in 14,701 motor vehicle crashes which resulted in 9,711 injured persons and 53 fatalities. In fact, a teenage-driver crash occurred in Utah every 36 minutes. Only 38.9 percent of occupants killed in teenage driven vehicles were reported as wearing a seatbelt. It is important to know that deaths and serious injuries caused by motor vehicle crashes could be reduced by as much as 50 percent with proper and consistent use of safety belts. Many students report that they don't buckle up because they aren't traveling far. Statistics show, however, that three out of four crashes happen within 25 miles of your home at speeds of 45 miles per hour or less. With so many students driving to school and other places every day, it is extremely important that Spanish Fork High School students remember to Buckle Up. Right now is the best time to start wearing your seat belt! It could be the one thing you do today that saves your life! The Utah County Health Department seeks to prevent avoidable disease and injury and promote health by monitoring the health of our community and assuring conditions in which people can be healthy. For more details about safety belt use, please go to www. UtahCountyHealth.org or call 851-7035. THAT'S DEBATABLE: Members of the SFHS Debate Team went on tour to compete at the University of Southern California. Lincoln/Douglas Debate. Luke Beeston took home a trophy for taking thirteenth in speaker points. The week-long trip also helped the students bond as a team. "We came together as a Key Club team and al 1 gained from each other's experiences and gained 25 more friends," said debate member Alex Muirbrook. Team President Leanna Thompson said, "Debate brought us all together as a family, because after every round we would come together and discuss how well we did." Mr. Brough, the advisor, has sent successful teams every year and this was no exception.
