HISSED Benjamin resident returns home from military service in Afghanistan Kathleen Olsen STAFF WRITER Welcome home, CSM Steve Stone of the Utah National Guard I Corps Artillery! After serving more than a year in Afghanistan, he and others of his unit returned home on Thursday, Aug. 23, 2007. His elated family met him in Salt Lake City as the jet bringing the soldiers home taxied under the spray from fire hoses heralding the homecoming. Yellow ribbons greeted him at his home in Benjamin and American flags flew from many homes in the community in his honor. That evening, he was surprised by a community ceremony put together by the Young Women and their leaders of the Benjamin first ward. Friends and neighbors gathered along the road between the Benjamin Church and the Benjamin Park with flags of all sizes, signs, cow bells and anything else they could think of to give Stone a heartfelt and grateful welcome. As his wife, Nancy, drove him to the event, he could see the crowd of cars and wondered what was going on at the church. He found out as they arrived and horns started blowing, people clapped and cheered, tears were shed, and the road See STONE • A6 * It was business as usual during Tuesday's City Council meeting us the council talked about progress on the development of the Wasatch Wind Farm. The farm, which will be the first of its kind in Utah, is moving forward and according to the mayor, construction is scheduled to begin within the next 60 days. Mayor Thomas said he felt the new wind farm would be "a great step forward lor Spanish Fork." The project is expected to be finished sometime in 2(KIS. The mayor dubbed the week of Aug. 26-Sept, I as Truck Driver Appreciation Week, encouraging the city to lake time to appreciate the hard work of many individuals in the area. Because of the transport of many different materials, we aiv able to enjoy the lives that we do. Council also ivcogni/ed Steven Dudley lor 32 >cars of dedicated service as an FMT. According to Ambulance Captain, Don Thomas. Dudley has been with the FMT since its beginning and has logged an estimated 70.000 hours of shift coverage. "As a city we arc truly grateful,*' the mayor said, commending Dudley on his efforts. Council joked that they would need eight or nine replacements to lilt Dudley's night shift spot, while Dudley, who has worked the same shift during all 32 years, was given a standing ovation by both council and those in attendance. City lintiineci' Richard Heap presented information regarding the possibility of a recycling program in Spanish Fork. While there is not currently a recycling program in the city, the council is looking at different options and discussing whether the program, if offered, would be mandatory or voluntary. Resident James West porter also submitted some proposals. West porter, who supports the program, says the benefits are, "many-fold." as recycling helps to "reduce air water and soil pollution." Westporler also pointed out that recycling helps us to set a good example and he hoped there could be a committee to discuss the progiam further. At the request of the mayor, city officials will gather more specific information on the subject before any decisions are made. In other news, the Parks and Recreation Department reported having some very good feedback on the surveys recently sent out to residents regarding their opinions of what they would like to see happening with Parks and Rec. Councilman Leifson said the Department will incorporate that information into the (Vaster Plan and will present their findings before council. Councilman Leifson also encouraged all city residents to vote at the upcoming election on Sept. 1 1. Residents who are not yet registered may do so at the county clerk's office.
