Show -N & W S- A10 • WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 15, 2007 Lady Dons soccer start with win over Payson 4-2 The Spanish Fork Lady Dons soccer team started their 2007 season off with a 4-2 win over the Payson Lions Thursday Aug. 9. Despite only having a couple of practices after tryouts were completed, ; Coach Gillie's team played * well and seemed to gain r confidence as the game f progressed. The Lions r grabbed the lead midway through the first half on a free kick from just outside the Spanish Fork penalty box after a Dons defender was called for pushing. Spanish Fork wasted little time in pulling even as Spanish Fork Senior Lindsee Thurgood scored from the right wing on a kick that sailed over the outreached arms of the t r Payson goalie. The score L C remained tied for the remainder of the first half despite two great scoring opportunities for Spanish Fork, the first on a kick by Senior Haley Richardson that bounced off the right post. The second opportunity was blocked by the "Lion goalie after a. centering pass from Senior Kelli Roach to Laura Vincent. I Switching directions in the second half seemed to help Spanish Fork's attack as they were able to go with the wind for the remaining 45 minutes. The Dons kept up the pressure on the Lions defense with several good shots on the Payson goal. Spanish Fork finally grabbed their first lead of the game on a goal by Senior Wendy Mejia and assist by Kelli Roach. Spanish Fork held r r the lead for the 21 minutes, however, an ill advised pass in their defensive end gave Payson a clean breakaway on the Spanish Fork goalie Junior Kylee Bufton. Buftbn was able to get a glove on the kick but it deflected into the Spanish Fork goal tying the score at 2-2 with just over nine minutes to play. Coach Gillie and the Dons stressed the importance of scoring quickly after any goal, especially their opponents. The Lady Dons did exactly that as they picked up the intensity and pressure on the Lion defense. Senior Lupe Espinosa gave the Lady Dons back the lead with just over four minutes left in the game and Senior Laura Vincent added the final goal just 60 seconds later to seal the 4-2 victory. As in most team sports the offense seems to get most of the accolades, however, the Lady Dons defense led by Seniors Natasha Sanborn, Rachel Woodruff, Junior goalie Kylee Bufton and defenders Katelyn Elliott,. Ashley Shelley, Jessie Anderson, Tina Ferguson, and many others played extremely well giving up only two goals, including one on a free kick. Spanish Fork travels to • North Sanpete, Tuesday Aug. 14 and returns home for games against Roy and Cyprus Thursday 16 and Friday the 17. This group of young men represented the Salem and Spanish Fork area very well by winning the 1415 year-old age division. They played teams from Southern Utah and Las Vegas, Nev. The Skyhawks were led by superb pitching, timely hitting and stellar defense throughout the tournament. After going 1-1 in their first two games, they knew they would need to win their next two games in order to play in the championship. The Skyhawks came back to beat Legacy High School of Las Vegas 12-5. The Skyhawks tied the game in the bottom of the second inning on a leadoff homerun by Josh Warr that cleared the left-field fence. Legacy put up two more runs in the top of the third but the Skyhawks came back once again in the third, scoring five runs on base hits from Gordon, Warren, Chris Drockton, Gavin McKee, and Phillip Sorenson. The second game of the day was the semi-final game against Southern Utah. Again the Skyhawks found themselves down early 4-0. Skyhawks rallied for five runs on a three-run homerun from Trevor Reynolds, followed by a solo homerun by Braden Warren. Brett Carter, who came into the game in the third inning to pitch, began the last inning holding on to a 6-4 lead. He promptly struck out the first two batters but then allowed two singles and two walks to allow a run to score and load the bases. However, Warren, who was catching, picked off the runner at third to end the game and give the Skyhawks the 6-5 win and a bearth in the championship game. The Skyhawks met Legacy High School again in the Championship game. Warren started on the mound for the Skyhawks and allowed only one run over five innings. Warren was great the rest of the way only allowing five base hits. But the Skyhawks couldn't score any runs of their own and the game went into the fourth inning with the Skyhawks down 1-0. However, in the bottom of the fourth Seth Anderson led off the inning with a single. The next batter McCade Gordon also singled and both runners advanced on a passed ball.
