Show The Garfield County Insider July 7, 2011 ESCACANTEINEWS , Marlene Haws 826-4859 or marleneh@color country.net - on his last visit home. Hopefully his doctors will find something to help him soon. The annual Escalante ladies Reunion was held in Richfield last Saturday 18th. Former Escalante lady residents, who ended up living in the Richfield area , started that reunion quite a number of years ago and it has continued until now. The ladies who were in attendance this year were: Mary Ellen Coleman and her four daughters: (The McInelly girls) Irene Brown, Cleva Swindle, Donna Rae Barker, Valeree (My sisters and I will probably remember her last name by next week! Sorry Valeree our memory is still good. They are just short!), Art Beth Alvey Pollock, Ilene Alvey Coffman, Elna Cottam Creek, LaVee Alvey Wiscombe, Bernice Osborn Jolley, Ruth Robinson Baugh, Renee Robinson Porter, Christine Alvey Morrill, Jerlie Heaps Kay, Deon Mecham Alvey, Geraldine Mecham Liston, Janene Alvey Duncan. Bernice Jolley took the mailing list so she could help with the reunion next year or I could have told you where all these pretty ladies live! Elnora Woolsey Williams wanted her name put on the mailing list for next year so we will all look forward to seeing her there. Almeda Haycock had company at her house. Her brother Darrell Spencer, Wenatchee, Wa. passed away and his daughter, Gayle Spencer and her brother-in-law (Linda's husband) Ted Schlosser, brought his remains here to bury him by his parents. Kim and Verna Davis Sorenson also came from Aurora. Verna is the late Vernon Davis' daughter. Vernon was a brother of Almeda too. Justin and Keri Marsh have a new baby boy. Congratulations to them! Justin has a dental office here in town now. He is a son of Sharon Dale and the late Shirley Marsh. We were all saddened to hear that the house at Cowpuncher Ranger Station (near Blue Spruce Camp Ground) had burned to the ground. Especially those of us who had fathers who worked for the Forest Service, as mine did. For 33 years (Starns Mecham). We spent many happy hours at Cowpuncher in the sum- The little log cabin, visitor's center, across the street from the "66 station is open again. The Lion's club members and volunteers have been busy giving out information and visiting with visitors and tourists. Thanks to those who are providing that service. Chad and Jordan Cottam are home from college in Wyoming. They are living here this summer. Jordan is working for her father-inlaw, Brent Cottam, at the Phillips station and Subway. Chad is working for Reed Munson and his construction company. Robert Haws is doing well since he suffered a heart attack in April. He can be seen most days walking his 3 miles around town. Reggie and Shondelle (Cottam) Gillins are the proud parents of a new baby boy, Bowden, he is their 4th boy. Grandpa Brent now has more than enough grandsons for a basketball team all his own! Plus they will soon have 3 girls for cheerleaders! My grandson, Brandon Haws, who is a police officer in St. George, was working the airport shift June 18 and was surprised to learn that the crowd that was gathering was waiting for a missionary who had parents from Escalante. Upon introducing himself to them they said they were Steve and Jenae Westoff and Steve told him, "I bought Klyn Hawses farm." Klyn being Brandon's grandfather. Small world! The crowd of relatives were waiting for Mitch Westoff who has just finished serving a LDS mission in Hong Kong. "Welcome Home Mitch!" (Let me know who comes to visit you now and we can get your news in the paper.) "Happy Birthday" to Thelma Marsh whose family gathered together to help her celebrate her 90th. That can't be, Thelma! You are still too spry and young looking! Jackie Withers has been much on our minds lately. Jackie is suffering some serious health issues and has gone to Gilbert, Az. for treatment. We wish her the very best and hope she feels better soon. Tom Jackson hasn't been feeling all that well lately. He has lost so much weight we hardly recognized him TO PLAY; COMPLETE THE GRID SO THAT EVERY ROW, EVERY COLUMN AND EVERY 3X3 BOX CONTAINS THE DIGITS 1 TO 9 6 8 7 9 5 7 1 8 4 1 3 9 7 7 3 2 8 3 4 611, 7. 9£83L Z1, 6 Z tL65938 T 8£1 , Z t L r 96 I £38 9631L 8 t Z Answers for this week 69 IZ £391, 168ZL 6Z8L 95 11- 8 9L£ I L 6 1 9 L 9 4 8 38 3 r, 1 5 5 £t Z8E69S '411111111111 mer time, camping, fishing, playing in the water and riding horses. A family from Phoenix, Az. had rented the house and their first night there it caught fire and there wasn't much of anything they could do to put it out. They felt lucky just to get out alive. One man suffered second degree burns on his head and one boy was having trouble breathing but other than that no one else was hurt. The fire did burn everything they had. They got out with only what they stood up in. It burned their trailer, boat and one of their trucks, besides the house and storage shed. They were most grateful to the people of Escalante who showed them such kindness and compassion and took care of them until they could get help from home. The family of Quinn and Doneen Griffin entertained a lot of people at the wedding and reception of their daughter, Brooke and Brett Palmer. We wish them the best, but some of us ladies were kinda upset with Brett for moving our hairdresser to Henrieville. However Brooke has promised to drive to Escalante each week so we can keep our appointments at her shop. Congratulations to both of them we hope they will be very happy ! Freland and Phyllis Alvey enjoyed the company of most of their kids and their families at a surprise party for Freland on his 80th birthday. One granddaughter, Carly Jo Christensen came from New York for the party and a couple of days afterward she and her parents, Clyde and Terri Christensen flew to London, England. The Alvey's daughter Larane Reyes couldn't make it but her daughter, Vickie and Gene Henderson, came from Aztec, New Mexico. Also in attendance were Freland's siblings LaDell (Karen) Alvey, Kanab, and their daughter Julie; Rolain Alvey and members of her family; Dana Alvey came from Cedar City. A number of people who live in town were there, including the Haws family , who are Phyllis's side of the family. HAPPY BIRTHDAY FRELAND ! Another 80th surprise party took place when Norman Christensen took Ardis to Loa , just for dinner with Julie Lyman and her family. When they got there 51 of their family members were gathered to greet them and wish Ardis a "HAPPY 80th!" Norm said, "She was astounded!" Ardis said, "I was dumbfounded!" After that their son, Gary, drove them to St. George (Winchester Hills) where they attended sacrament meeting where his and Judilyn's son, Coby, reported on his mission to Brazil. "HAPPY BIRTHDAY ARDIS!" I know a few more who will be in that same position before long. Most of them are classmates of mine! Kory and Klyn (Jr.) Haws came from Hurricane to visit their Dad, Rick, and Grandma, Marlene. Kory left on Wednesday to go back to Iraq. Ben and Renee Porter went to Provo. Ben to see his doctor and Renee stayed for a few days to visit with her sister, Beth, and her friends from California. Dwight and Jaleen (Liston) Vance are here from Texas for the summer. It's good to see a light at their place once again. Junior and Debra Cronin had all of their family here for the wedding of their daughter, Kendall and Alex Munson. Debra's sister, LaNell Cottam, and family came from Cedar City. The family of Reed and Karen Munson were here including Reed's siblings: Maurine and Dee Nelson, American Fork; Barbara Munson, Orem; Stan Munson, Trenton; Milan and Brenda Munson, Blanding. Pat and Bobbi Coughlin made a trip to St. George to see Pat's doctor. Everything turned out alright. Pat had a lot of tests and brought one apparatus home to wear for another test. Life is full of tests, Huh, Pat? Stay well. Darlene Edmiston has been having some health problems. She will be going to Las Vegas, where her folks live, for some tests. Best of luck to her. We hope she will be feeling better soon. She has been missed at the Thrift Store. Darlene Woolsey has recently had eye surgery. That probably won't slow her down for long. She is too determined and self sufficient to let anything slow her down much. Anything we can do, Darlene, give us a call. Carrie Griffin received an invitation from her granddaughters in Cedar City to come and go to the Shakespearean Festival with them. They had her tickets all bought and I believe they even came and got her. Hope they had a great time. Jim and Evelyn (Lyman) Corning have been here again from Tucson, Az. They are really looking forward to the time when they can move back here to stay. It sounds like the John Meisenbach family has been buying a lot of Escalante property lately. Seems as though most of them would like to come back before too long. I say more power to them. We would be glad to get them back in this country. There's no place like Escalante. I have been so envious of the people who got to go to Cedar City for the summer games. It would have been fun just to go to the basketball games and watch our young men from this area play! I probably will miss someone but the names I got of a few of them were as follows: Ryan Cottam, Chad Cottam, Nathan Lyman, Escalante; Wayne Ott, Matt Stahle (who is Michon Ott's husband) Tropic; Zack Orton, Cameron Leach, Panguitch; George Williams and Kit Goulding who used to play on Valley's team. Chad's team lost out on a gold medal by losing their game by one point. But they did get a silver one. Congratulations to them. Arnold and Deon Alvey went to Loa to visit with their daughter, Janeen Duncan, and family. Janeen's son, Danny, was there from Las Vegas. You can make it easy on yourself and your loved ones by taking a few simple steps to ensure that your estate is in order. Whatever the size of your estate, large or small, the first step is to have your intentions put in writing. You can do this either in a basic will or a will plus the trust documents that will be needed to carry out your wishes. An estate planning professional can help you make the best decision for your individual financial and family situation. Once you have a plan in place, it is usually a good idea to discuss your wishes with your family. If a family member has questions about the details, or has any quibbles, you can explain your reasons for structuring your estate plan as you have. Often a simple and direct explanation that makes sense to your family will set their minds at ease, and prevent future hard feelings. While your family shouldn't dictate your actions, they should be informed about them. It is also a good idea to discuss division of your personal property. The method of making a list with a description of the property items and who you'd like to have them — with input from your children — can alleviate any hard feelings later. Putting together an estate plan is not as daunting as it might seem at first, and it pays big dividends in the long run. Not having an estate plan in place can cost you not only in dollars and cents, but could also cost you family discord. Even if your children are grown with families of their own, you can probably remember scenes of sibling rivalry when they were younger. In some families, the competition continues into adulthood; for others, it decreases as children mature. But it can all come flooding back while trying to divide up your estate after your death, as your children argue over who gets what. If you die without a will or trust, a court will decide, based on state law, who will inherit your property. The result could well be contrary to your wishes. You have worked hard and accumulated assets - house, car, jewelry, investments, family heirlooms, etc. It is risky to simply expect your children to divide your assets evenly or work the distribution out for themselves. It is sure to create problems and mount expenses of probate, and your heirs will have to put up with court-appointed people making the family decisions. While many people worry about the federal estate tax, the truth is most of us won't have a tax problem under the current tax laws.
