Lune 3rd has come 'n gone!! Here it is almost mid June and the majority of us didn't even notice the importance of June 3...on a national basis, that is! After all, June 3 IS National Doughnut Day! Naturally, this got us to thinking...what are the FACTS surrounding doughnuts...cupcakes...cookies 'n such? Here Ya go... There are, roughly 225 cupcake-only shops in the US. Sales of cupcakes are expected to rise 20% in the next five years. 10 million lbs of powdered suger, plus the same amount of chocolate are used each year to make the two Billion (yes BILLION!) `Donettes' by the Hostess company (the most bought in stores.) Laduree (149yr old confectioner) sells 2,000 macaroons a day (in Paris)...Their macaroons are now being sold in Whole Foods, Trader Joe's and Starbucks (US) and in French McDonald's. Cookies outsell dougnuts 6-1 (US). The Magnolia Bakery (their cupcakes have been featured on Sex & the City), sells 8,220 cupcakes a day in New York, Los Angeles...and, DUBAI!! Cupcakes 'star' in three current TV shows: DC Cupcakes, Cupcake Wars, & The Cupcak Girls. In 2010, Crumb's Bake Shops 34 outlets pulled in $31.1 Million...equal to 7.8 million cupcakes sold @ $4 each. They are planning to expand to 200 locations by 2014. 9,776 Dunkin' Donuts shops, in 31 countries sell 4.1 million cups of coffee & 5.3 million doughnuts (that should be donuts!) each day, with glazed being the most popular. Maine legislators actually lobbied to have the Whoopie Pie the state dessert (near by residents of PA collected 1,700 signatures in protest!!) Both states host annual Whoopie Pie festivals! The largest (ever) Whoopie Pie, made in Maine, weighed 1,967 lbs...That's 2001bs of eggs...3001bs of flour...5501bs of filling and 3001bs of suger... enough for 6,000 servings (can you imagine the Suger Buzz if all 6,000 were kids? Starbucks celebrated its 40th anniversary this past March, with petite Whoopie Pies, cupcakes and cake pops @ $1.50 ea.
