Show June 2011 Page ESCALANTE NEWS OBITUARIES Marlene Haws 826-4859 or marleneh@color-country.net I'm baaaack! For Those of you who do not know, or remember, I wrote for the Garfield County news for over ten years. When they closed down I thought I was through too! But as time has elapsed and upon being approached with a number of requests over time, the last one being made by our Escalante Mayor, Jerry Taylor, I have decided to submit an Escalante column once again. Thanks to Ryan and the Garfield County Insider. As I remember, it was after a Memorial day weekend that I first began to write the news, so this will be a good place to start. I will depend a lot on all of you to call your news in each week. Escalante was filled to capacity on the holiday weekend. Not only with former residents but with folks who traveled here, from all over, for the dedication of the heritage center, at the site where our new visitor center will eventually be built. Since the release of Gerald Lund's new book on the "Hole In The Rock", entitled "Undaunted", our Escalante Desert road has been a thoroughfare for people from all walks of life who have wanted to see the "Hole In The Rock" and experience a taste of what our pioneers went through to complete the "impassible"! An article has already been submitted about the celebration so I will get on with the news about all the folks who were "home" for it, as I know this is what you like to hear. If I miss your news then please call me so we can get it in the paper next week! Not unlike other years there were a few class reunions going on. One, I know of, was held at the home of Edson and Iona Alvey, which now belongs to their daughters, Lana Jordon and Arvonne Whittaker. It was Arvonne's class but I didn't get to talk to anyone after the reunion so if anyone reading this was there, please report! The Jared Riley Porter family reunion was also going on and trying to compete with all the other activities. As a result it was smaller than usual. Some of those, to name a few, who were in attendance were: members of the DeLane and Leah Griffin family; the family of Carolyn and Vergean Porter; the Budd and Aloha Porter family, Provo; Bernice Losee, Spanish Fork; Bob and Sandra Porter and daughter, Tresa, Mesa, Az.; Dave and Yoland McInelly family (we missed Dave this year), Mesa, Az.; Ed and Phyllis Jarrett, Kingston; Joan Ford, New Harmony, Ut., granddaughter of Joseph (Jode) Porter. Sorry I didn't get her husband's name. Members of the Haws Porter family; his daughter, Ruscene Porter was in charge of the reunion; sons of the late Jack Porter, Paul and Tom and Susan Porter, Lehi; Kenneth Griffin, DeLoa Fillmore, Provo; Trudy Dickerson, Cedar City. There were others that I didn't get to visit with, so I need help with that. I visited with Dick and Donette Lee, St. George. Dick commented on the "ocean breeze" that was still blowing, as he and his father-in-law, Wanlas Alvey, always referred to the wind. The Lee's are doing fine and look great! They were leaving here and visiting in Panguitch with Dick's family on their way home. Other folks I saw from Panguitch were sisters of Thais Griffin: Beverly Crosby and Ardith Davis and their brother, Ken Roe. Gene and Thais also had part of their family, and their friends, here for the weekend. Geraldine and Lane Liston had their son Gary here before the holiday. Sandy, his wife, was in Cannonville with their daughter and family, Emilee and Dallas Clark. Gary's daughter, Jenifer, and Tyler McLemore were here for the weekend and also visited Tyler's family, Mark and Susann McLemore. The grandparents have a hard time sharing Tyler's and Jen's new little baby girl. She IS a cutie. Danny and Sherri Meisenbach were here again at their home (the one that used to belong to Reese Roundy). Sherri, her son Shane and daughter, Katie would live here but Danny won't let them 'cause he isn't retired yet and he wants to be here too! Johnny and Peggy Meisenbach are also moving closer to the day when they can move back to Escalante. They bought the home that belonged to Winnie Washburn in the EllettOyler subdivision. I think Peggy gets to spend a little more time here than Johnny does too. Their daughter Amy and Jimmy Alvey use the house quite often too I hear. Jim and Jolyn Spencer, John and Corinne Spencer were here for the weekend from Orem. Ben and Renee Porter's house was full of family. Across the street from them Deon and Arnold Alvey had their kids, the Whitefields, here from Vegas and Thelma Marsh had her daughter, Kathleen Woolsey here from Cedar City. Kathleen's husband Warren is teaching dentistry now, so this has given Kathleen a chance to spend more time with her mom. Vernon and Peg Roundy, Monroe, enjoyed the weekend with their family at the rentals of Shannon Steed. Renon and Gene Reed, Richfield, came to spend the day on Sunday. The family of Loreta Shurtz, Richfield were all here. Gordon, Don, Virginia and, I presume, Dorothy and Newell Cowles, Richfield. I am thinking I need to put a sign-in sheet at the cemetery so I'll know who has been in town! I saw Gerald Haycock, Boyd Alvey and Howard and LaNea Munson there. The wind was blowing most times I went so not many people were there. The Mounteer girls, Marva, Peggy, Myrna and Carol had been there. They said every grave was decorated at one time or another during the day, 'cause the wind blew all the flowers to one end of the cemetery, then turned and blew them all the other way! Eunice Allen Groves, Salt Lake area, visited at the home of Lois and Dan Spencer. She celebrated her birthday while she was here and Dan and Lois celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. Congratulations to all three. I think Eunice was 29 again! She also visited with her cousin Rolain Alvey. Nathan and Elisa Lyman and their two cute little kids visited in town with parents, Brent and Patrice Cottam and Richard and Debbie Lyman. (Now I know all the little kids in town are cute. But I have the advantage. I am the grandma of some of them!) Nate and Elisa just recently moved into their new home in Kanab. I got hugs from three cute ladies at the program Saturday night, the Liston sisters, Lana and Lois and their cousin Terry Gates Dowdle. Also saw Mavis Munson and some of her family from Idaho; Enid Bassett, who was here with her daughter Sue Bassett; and Valerie Huntington, Hatch; Alvin and Joan Cowles, Richfield; Mike and Grena Searle and family. St. George and former Escalante Postmaster, Beth Hunt and her granddaughter from Loa. The children of Betty (Smith) Alvey were here: Linda Stokes, Irene Tait, and Johnny Alvey. They too probably had family members with them. Steve and LaVee Wiscombe and Jim and Lola Alvey came from Mapleton. Eva Dean Liston didn't come with Jim and Lola and we missed her. Gary Wayne Graff, Cedar City and Monty Revord, Jackson, Florida were here. Monty has been here for a while and was able to go to Salt Lake and visit with her brother, Blake Schow, before he passed away. Our sincere condolences to Blake's family. Vernon Spencer was home for the week with his family. Jerry and Janeal Chatterton, Salt Lake area, also visited with them. Ross Woolsey was here from Mesquite, Nev. Danny and Rae Ann Woolsey also visited from Salina. Yukon Norman's daughters came from Redmond and Salina for Memorial Day: Lana Roberts, Moniece Tackett and Becky Castleman. They also visited with their sister Linda Overall. Yukon's sister, LaRae and husband Marion Allen came from LaVerkin and Gary Norman came from Mantua (Brigham City) to mow and clean his lot that once belonged to his cousin Dee Lynn Norman. I hate to end on a sad note, but I think everyone in town would wish to express condolences to Carrie Griffin and her family in their time of sorrow. It's a hard pill to swallow when we lose our young people. Shelley will be missed. Remember PLEASE call me with your news. Karleen McInelly Realtor ®, GRI 435-231-1546 D&B REAL ESTATE CEDAR CITY $169,000 230 S Southerfand Cowl Troyic, UT 84776 Vee Worthen Panguitch, Utah Our dear father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend Vee Worthen, 96, passed away June 3, 2011 in Panguitch, Utah. He was the oldest man in Panguitch. Vee was born February 16, 1915 to Samuel and Alice Cameron Worthen in Panguitch, Utah. He was the 3rd of seven children. Vee attended school in Panguitch and at the age of 21 he served a church mission to the Eastern and New England States. Upon returning he married his sweetheart Adele Francis on November 3, 1938 in the Manti Temple. They had two children; Janice and David. Vee drove Continental Trailways bus for twelve years throughout Utah and the West before returning to his roots, Panguitch. There Vee and Adele owned and operated Vee's Conoco Service, Worthen Oil Co,. and the family farm. Vee found his "niche" in life. He loved the station because he could talk and visit with the town's people and tourists as they passed through, and he loved the farm and outdoor lifestyle of Southern Utah. Vee was always involved in church, civic, and service projects. He had the best sense of humor and loved to tell stories. He was never afraid to give advice and explain the "right" way to do things. He will be greatly missed on his daily drives down the "River Lane" in his old red 1972 truck making sure the farmers are planting and farming the "right" way and to offer advice where needed. Preceded in death by his wife, Adele; daughter, Janice; granddaughter, Stephanie Dalton; parents; brothers and sisters. Survived by son, David (Olivia) Worthen, sister, Beth Nolf; grandsons, Mike (Chris) Dalton, Tod Crofts; 9 Grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; 6 great- great grandchildren The family would like to thank the special people of Panguitch who have been so kind to Vee throughout his life, especially the last few years. Thank you for the food, the visits, the friendship, the caring. The funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at 12 :00 noon in the Panguitch 2nd LDS Ward Chapel. Friends may call at the ward chapel in Panguitch on Wednesday from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Panguitch Cemetery. Funeral directors, Magleby Mortuary, Richfield, Salina and Manti.
