Show April 14, 2011 ANNOUNCING USU SUMMER BIOTECH ACADEMY FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS The Biotechnology Summer Academy is an opportunity for high school juniors and seniors to experience cuttingedge laboratory research first-hand at Utah State University's Center for Integrated BioSystems. Biotech Summer Academy is for students interested in bioscience, medicine and engineering. The five-day program is held on the campus of Utah State University in Logan, Utah. An advanced program is available for returning students. Students are mentored by USU faculty who work in various disciplines. Faculty and members of their laboratory guide students through the planning and practice of daily research experiments and activities. Each student is assigned to work with a specific group for the duration of the program. Students gain exposure to facets of the group's research by being integrated in the daily work of the laboratory. Biotech Summer Academy, now entering its 11th year, challenges students to prepare for their future. Students will explore everything from plants, soils, food, nutrition, animal and veterinary sciences, to current topics in genomics and cloning. "We want the students to see how research is done in the labs," said Afifa Sabir, education coordinator/program director for the Center for Integrated BioSystems. "Many of the students we see at the program return to attend USU on scholarship." The week's activities include communication workshops, lectures and demonstrations, laboratory training, field trips, mentoring and research. Program dates are July 11-15. The fee is $200 (scholarship support may be available) and includes five days of room and board. Application deadline is June 3. For more information, e-mail cibtraining@usu.edu , or call 435-797-3504. The program brochure and application are available on online at http://www.biosystems.usu.edu/ education. Ask a Specialist •• Do You Understand What I Said? By Kathleen Riggs, Utah State University Extension f amily and consumer sciences faculty "I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant," said writer Robert McCloskey. How often have our words been misunderstood by the recipient, no matter how hard we tried to communicate effectively? In the best case scenario, we can back track, explain ourselves and move on in our conversation. However, it is not uncommon to have the unintended meaning of our words cause hurt, resentment or even anger. The real purpose behind good communication is to develop positive relationships. The power of words can strengthen relationships at home, at work, on sports teams, in classrooms and as we deal with the public. We must make a conscious effort to show interest in others if we truly want to increase the bonds of understanding and trust. Writer and consultant Sheila Dicks shares "The Top Seven Business Strategies for Effective Communication." These skills are also applicable to family and friends. 1. Listen. Good listening skills and showing a genuine interest are attributes of a successful communicator. Those who actively listen to questions and complaints are more able to solve problems and gain loyalty. 2. Use names. When meeting people, make sure you hear the person's name and use it right away so you will remember it. If you are not sure what the person said, ask him or her to repeat it. 3. Get to the point. Show value for people's time by being as concise as possible when giving information. Do not give lengthy, unnecessary details and don't make excuses for your mistakes. Answer the question and give important information only. 4. Let others talk. Don't be a person who does all the talking. What you are saying may be of interest only to you. Keep the other person in mind, giving him or her a chance to be part of the conversation. Look for signals that you may be boring your listener, and ask questions to involve them in the conversation. 5. Be aware of non-verbal language. Ninety-five percent of our communication is non-verbal, which includes eye movement, voice tone, posture, facial expressions and hand gestures. When talking to someone, keeping eye contact without staring shows a sense of confidence. Be aware of non-verbal communication and keep it consistent with your spoken message. 6. Watch vocal cues. Do not use excessive filler words such as "ahh or urn" or use lengthy pauses during conversation. The listener will lose interest in what you are saying and become bored. 7. Create an atmosphere of openness. To establish a good relationship with others and create a comfortable atmosphere, be attentive to the number of interruptions. Give your customer or family member your undivided attention by not keeping physical barriers (such as desks) between you. Avoid trying to communicate in a busy area, and keep your focus on the listener. While none of us can predict how our words will be perceived by the listener, improving our ability to communicate effectively will better ensure that they will receive the message as we intended it. We will also develop a stronger ability to truly listen and be interested in others. The Garfield County Insider - tIOYAL, Is gE WA-IE IIIMIUCERS AG MARKET NEWS Receipts: 1,313; Last Week: 971.
