PREVENTION PATCHWORK FOR COMMUNITY MENDING BRINGS "MAGIC" TO PANGUITCH HIGH AND ELEMENTARY On April 6th the students of Panguitch High School and Elementary were entertained and enlightened by Magic Mike Cottam. He came bringing his "magic" and message of good choices including staying away from drugs and alcohol and choosing to be good people and good citizens. The students were captivated by his analogies from the Wizard of Oz and Dumbo. He invited students from the audience to portray the different characters using clever balloon sculptures as costumes and props. His magic tricks were amazing and his manner completely engaging as he incorporated laughter with learning. Mr. Cottam lives in Saratoga Springs with his wife who is the "world's best husband trainer". He is a retired school counselor who because of his talent and ability to connect with his audience is now asked to bring his magic and message to schools. Special thanks to Mr. Cottam for sharing his gift and to Melissa Veater for arranging for him to be here! UTAH FILM CIRCUIT DOCUTAH announces its partnership with the SLC Film Center on the Utah Film Circuit for a monthly film screening event. Organizers of the DOCUTAH International Film Festival feel the need to provide a global connection to the community of St. George through documentary film. "Documentary films play an important part in the way we communicate with one another" recognizes Festival Director, Phil Tuckett. "They can make you laugh or cry and the potential is there to learn something about the world around us." The Utah Film Circuit will make a stop in St. George on Friday April 29. Mark your calendar to attend the screening of the documentary film, Carbon Nation at 7:30pm in the Eccles main stage theatre on the campus of Dixie State College. This event is free and open to the general public. Carbon Nation is a climate change solutions movie that doesn't care if you believe in climate change. Even if you doubt the severity of the impact of climate change or just don't buy it at all, this compelling and relevant film illustrates important issues in regards to conservation. Filmmaker Peter Byck is traveling on the film circuit and will be available for Q&A at the close of the film. DOCUTAH is the Southern Utah International Film Festival presented by Dixie State College in St. George. The 2011 Festival dates are September 8 — 17. Festival goers come for the films and stay for the scenery. "We are excited to open this year's festival on Thursday September 8 with the biography of entertainer, Wayne Newton and a performance by the legend himself. The festival is filled with wonderful surprises including a culminating event at the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah", states Festival Executive Director, Christina Schultz. One of the big agenda items was a presentation by a Zion's Bank representative, Alex Buxton explaining the possibility of refinancing one of the district's general obligation bonds. This action will save the Garfield County taxpayers $40,000-$45,000 over the next four years. (It was decided at a special meeting the following day to pursue the refinancing on the bond.) This doesn't help the district with budget issues but is a direct savings to the taxpayer. The board also approved a wrestling program at Bryce Valley High School. They are the only high school in the district without a wrestling program and it was felt that having another program would also strengthen the programs at the other two high schools. The board also heard from Gary Bennett, counselor at Panguitch High about the great things happening in comprehensive guidance at Panguitch and across the district. He will be having his program reviewed by the state this year. The district budget is still a great concern for board members and a work meeting has been scheduled for April 5th to look at possible solutions to budget shortfalls. In the public comment portion of the meeting, Escalante parents voiced a concern about moving the students at Escalante Elementary to the high school and closing the elementary. The board indicated to parents that this was only an initial look to see if it was feasible and a significant cost benefit. This is not looking like an option at this time, but if it is on the table in the future, there will be many opportunities for community input. Other actions by the board included approving schedules for track, golf, cross country, and volleyball as well as approving the 2011-2012 school calendar and making a correction on counselor stipend pay. The next board meeting will be held on April 21st at 5:00 at Bryce Valley High School.
