Show EverylCounts - Ey, 6,4444 Kevin's* a model boss. He is such a good leader that the single women in his office —perhaps some of the married ones' too-- wish he could be their husband. To describe Kevin think of Christ like behavior. Add to that he's very good to his mother. According to Queen Drake (2010), Chicago New Relationships Examiner, "The way a man treats his mother is a good indication in how he will treat you." Drake continued, "Studies have showed correlation with a man's relationship with a woman is reflected by his relationship with his mother." And American poet Ralph Waldo Emerson (2011) said, "Men are what their mothers made them." So when you think about the men in your life, your boss, your civic leader, your spouse, your church leader, your fiancé, your boyfriend, your teacher, etc., think about how they treat their mothers and wives and other women in their lives, even you. Hopefully, you will find, that treatment to be good or better or even best. I once worked for a "Kevin" named Rick Roggia, a retired US Army Colonel and Chaplain now \ How He Treats His Maher Is Go Iddirator f How Hell Treat You serving a mission in Africa with his wife for their church. Chaplain Roggia, as I called him, believed in me so much that even though he hadn't seen much of my writing, provided an opportunity for me to write his Chaplains Corner of this Army newspaper in Okinawa, Japan, merely from my telling him how much I liked to write. Like Kevin above, Chaplain Roggia is Christ like; he is also good to his mother, wife, daughters, and to the other women in his life including those in his military community, his neighbors, friends, and even total strangers. Chaplain Roggia is the epitome of what we read in the Bible, most specifically in Ephesians 5:28, "He that loveth his wife loveth himself." If you love yourself, you can love others. This is not an egotistical or pretentious love, it is unconditional, selfless and Christ like. So if you are a man and reading this column and you are not treating the women in your life like they are your most prized and cherished possessions, it's never too late to change. And if you're women reading this column, be an example to the men in your life to what they can become, especially if those men didn't have good relationships with their mothers. Even American Physicist Albert Einstein (2011) would agree saying, "Setting an example is not the main means of influencing another, it is the only means." And if you're in an abusive or other potentially life threatening situation, then you may need to exit that relationship — as did a former student of mine since her husband was beating her-- and involve law enforcement. To the "Kevin's" of this world, as mentioned above, we thank you, salute you and are grateful for you and how you treat us. By way of your treatment, adding to our already personal foundation built on our Savior Jesus Christ, you help us become even better daughters of our Heavenly Father than we were before we met you. *Name change. E-mail: kimball@everylcounts.net Smarter Development of Renewable Energy on U.S. Public hands Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar today announced a number of initiatives designed to encourage rapid and responsible development of renewable energy on public lands. The proposals from the Department's Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and the policy guidance from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) provide clarity and guidance to stakeholders, including developers and employees, about smart siting and effective mitigation for renewable energy projects. "Renewable energy is a key part of keeping America competitive, creating jobs, and winning the future for our children," said Secretary Salazar. "At the Department of the Interior, we have a responsibility to ensure that solar, wind and geothermal projects are built in the right way and in the right places so they protect our natural and cultural resources and balance the needs of our wildlife. Taken together, today's initiatives are another positive step toward making sure we are building a clean energy economy that is smart from the start. The renewable energy conference we are hosting this week will give us an opportunity to get feedback on these initiatives as we continually try to improve our processes and build on lessons learned." The announcements come in advance of a conference that the Department of the Interior is hosting on February 9-10, 2011 regarding onshore renewable energy development. Page 3 The Garfield County Insider February 10, 2011 The conference will bring together stakeholders from all corners of the country to discuss the Obama administration's initiative to stand up large-scale renewable energy on public lands. The FWS today released two draft documents designed to provide agency employees, developers, federal agencies, and state organizations the information they need to make the best possible decisions in reviewing and selecting sites for utility-scale and community-scale wind energy facilities to avoid and minimize negative impacts to fish, wildlife, plants and their habitats. The documents are part of Interior's ongoing efforts to improve siting and permitting of renewable energy projects on public lands. The guidelines will be available for public comment for 90 days following publication in the Federal Register. The draft guidance is incorporated into two documents. Draft Voluntary, Land-Based Wind Energy Guidelines have been developed for industry to avoid and minimize impacts to federally protected migratory birds and bats and other impacted wildlife resulting from site selection, construction, operation and maintenance of land-based, wind energy facilities. The FWS also has developed peer-reviewed Draft Eagle Conservation Plan Guidance for wind project developers and FWS employees who must evaluate impacts from proposed wind energy projects to eagles protected by the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and oth- er federal laws. The draft guidelines will be available later today here. "Development of wind power and other renewable energy sources is a key part of our nation's energy strategy for the future, and we are committed to facilitating that development," said Fish and Wildlife Service Acting Director Rowan Gould. "This guidance will help our employees work with the wind energy industry to minimize impacts to the environment, and I look forward to receiving comments from the public on these draft documents so the final guidance represents the best path forward." The BLM's final policy memoranda to provide guidance to field managers in evaluating, screening and processing applications for utility-scale wind and solar energy projects on BLMmanaged lands. This field guidance clarifies and improves National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documentation; streamlines the project application review and approval process; and strengthens Plans of Development (POD) and due diligence requirements. BLM developed these policies from recommendations offered by federal and state agencies, industry and environmental groups based on `lessons learned' from last year's fast-track renewable energy initiatives. Aging Thoroughbred A buyer was considering purchasing an aging thoroughbred but wanted a veterinarian's opinion of the horse before finalizing the deal. When the vet had completed his examination the potential buyer asked, "Will I be able to race him?" The veterinarian looked at the buyer, then at the horse. "Sure," he replied, "And you'll probably win!" The New Pastor The pastor shocked the congregation when he announced that he was resigning from the church and moving to a drier climate. After the service a very distraught lady came to the pastor with tears in her eyes, "Oh, Pastor Bob, we are going to miss you so much. We don't want you to leave!" The kindhearted pastor patted her hand and said "Now, now, Carolyn, don't carry on. The pastor who takes my place might be even better than me". "Yeah", she said "That's what they said the LAST time too!!!" Your Homework? Teacher: "why is your homework in your father's handwriting?" Student: "Uh, I used his pen." The Sermon One beautiful Sunday morning, a minister announced to his congregation: "My good people, I have here in my hands three sermons ... a $100 sermon that lasts five minutes, a $50 sermon that lasts fifteen minutes, and a $10 sermon that lasts a full hour. "Now, we'll take the collection and see which one I'll deliver." It Makes Sense...By Veda Hale This week's it-makes-sense suggestion is aimed at me. Me and anyone else who keeps two homes or is just moving into a new or old home. I hope I remember it every time I move from living quarters to living quarters. I have sometimes wondered what might be in those water pipes we so expect to always deliver us good water. I do think from the water people at the source, they do send out clean water that has been treated to kill harmful bacteria, but then what? When you have returned from vacations, live in a newly built house or have installed a new faucet, flushing the water pipes helps you to get cleaner water again. While you are on vacations, the water in the pipelines does not move. Therefore there is higher chance that metal particles from the pipes end up in the water. There is also increased chance of bacteria growth.
