Show The Garfield County Insider girl . PANGUITCH.c. August 5, 2010 IS ESMARVACCEN-ARMEIUD by Vicki D. Syrett 679-8687 or vickidiane36@hotmail. Panguitch has two fun on going events on Friday nights. Sal Luca and his lovely bride Josephine are hosting Dancing to the Past. This dance is being held at the Social Hall and runs from 7 to 10 pm. Dancing is a big part of our areas past, with an out side dance pavilions in every town. All are welcome and there is no cost. Dancing is also great exercise so come on out and join in on the fun. Also on Friday night is the Movie in the Park and it starts at dusk. It is held at the Park and has family films showing. This is a great family outing and is free, goodies are available for sale. Bring your own chairs and blankets and enjoy. Can you believe all the progress that is being made on the old Gem Theater? The roof is done, the out side has a new coat of stucco and the front has new windows and doors in place. It just looks great, what a wonderful addition to Panguitch. Hopefully the cement work on the Quilt Park will be done by soon and we can start on the landscaping. Many thanks to all the volunteers that have helped us this far. When they get ready to put down the sod, we will let know you know and you can come down and take part in this endeavor. This last week was the Southwest Cal Ripken Championship Baseball Tournament. Panguitch hosted this event that ran all week long. I sure was impressed not only with the play of our 11 year olds, but all of the help that went into making this such a successful tournament. Panguitch's team hosted a dinner for the 400 kids and their parents on Wednesday night. With the contributions from the town, they were able to this for free. Many connected with the team help out, along with most of the players. Two teams that played at seven that evening didn't get through with their game till after 9:00 and the workers didn't get out of building until after 10:30 pm. On Thursday afternoon we had two hours of down pour and the fields got flooded. The grounds crew were there till 11:00pm pumping out the diamonds and drying out the fields. Friday morning the fields were as good as new and the tournament proceeded, with little delay. These baseball tournaments bring in a lot of fans to Panguitch and are great for the economy. Panguitch's ball team was sure fun to watch, they were clearly the best team from Utah. They won 4 and lost 2 and played in the semi finals against a California team who is one of the best in the Country. Panguitch won two of the games by the surrender rule in 4 innings. The great thing about this tournament was with two brackets, each team got to play at least 4 games. For those that traveled a long ways, this is the only way to go. Our 12 year old All Star Team went to Lehi and lost two very close games and was eliminated. All in all it was a great week for little league baseball, in our area. This week is the start of high school baseball practice. Panguitch High School will be the defending State Champs and with only losing one senior from last years team, should have a very good team again. These monsoon rains sure have everyone's lawn looking good. Watering once a week just doesn't quite get it. Panguitch Lake is still full and the farmers can look for water far into the fall. Pat and I went for a ride out through Red Canyon; they really had a lot of damage done from the storm that hit them on Wednesday. A wall of mud and water went through the Red Canyon Indian Store and did some damage to the floors. It's amazing that a Canyon that is so dry can flood as much as it does and that dry river bed can over flow its banks. I understand the Wide Hollow reservoirs dam is nearing completion. I hear that there are so many springs in the reservoir that they couldn't get them to slow so they could put in the dam. I hope this rain will be of help in filling up their reservoir and they can get back to using it for irrigating their farms and lawns. Senator Bob Bennett, got the ball rolling almost three years ago, on this project. Getting all that silt out it should really increase the capacity of the reservoir. Calf Creek Falls trail has been closed for all of July and should now be open for your pleasure. Calf Creek is my favorite hiking trail; it is easy enough for us old people to make. What a sight those falls are, the water is really cold and PRESIDENT CAN DEMONSTRATE COMMITMENT TO JOB CREATION BY STOPPING MORE TAXES ON SMALL BUSINESS Utah Senator Says Raising Taxes on Small Business "Makes as Much Sense as Throwing an Anvil to a Drowning Man" U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) said today that if the President is serious about helping small business then he should stop job-killing tax hikes on small businesses that are set to take effect on January 1, 2011. Hatch issued the following statement: "On the one hand, the President says the Senate should pass legislation for small business, but on the other hand he's calling for massive, job-killing, small-business tax hikes. If the President has his way, small businesses employing up to 20 million Americans and half of all small business income will be hit with more crushing taxes. When our economy is as weak as it is and with unemployment hovering near ten percent, this makes as much sense as throwing an anvil to a drowning man. The President can demonstrate his commitment to job creation by putting a stop to more and more taxes that are crippling small businesses, our nation's engine of economic growth." According to the Joint Committee on Taxation, almost half of all small business income would be hit by these tax increases. And a Gallup survey found that small businesses employing up to 20 million Americans would be subject to these new taxes. refreshes you for the trip out. They finally got the east gate of Zions Park figured out. Originally they were going to be closed till November, and then it was going to be open in the night time. Now it's open in the morning from Sam to 8pm. When people make decisions that aren't from an area, it is usually a disaster. This way they are working twelve hour shifts instead of 8 and when it is cool. The 6 million dollars for this project is part of the Presidents stimulus money that is being put in to badly needed repairs to our National Parks. Deanna Brown is taken her son Clayton and Jaylen Dodds on a trip to an orphanage in Haiti. Worldwide the Haitian orphanages have the highest mortality rate. Clayton and Jaylen will stay on site and help feed the children as well as other tasks. Deanna is a nurse mid wife and will be teaching and working with the staff at the orphanage. They will be gone for about 10 days. What a great experience for these young students and what a service these 3 Panguitch volunteers are giving to the very needy. I know it's a little late for the Summer Games, but we had two more silver medal winners. Code Green and Colton Owens played baseball with the Utah County T-Wolves. After three days of competition, they made it to the Championship game against the St. George's Rebels and ended taking 2nd place. Nest week is our biggest rodeo of the year. It is the High School Championships, and the competitors come from all over the western states. These kids are really good, with a number of riders coming from Panguitch area it will be an exciting week. It is only two short weeks till the Garfield County Fair. Check your garden for some prize winning veggies, or get out your beautiful quilts or works of art. Since we didn't have an art show at the Quilt Walk Festival this year, it would be a good time to share your art work or photos. Any displays are welcome, even old tractors are welcome. With all the talent in our area this should make for great entertainment. I see that around town that there are some demolition derby cars under way and there should be tickets available at the City Hall, County building, and at various gas stations and at the Fair building during the Fair. Pre derby prices are $7.00 and $10.00 at the gate. The following week will be the first annual ATV rally in Panguitch. They are still looking for guides to lead the way, so dust off your four wheeler and show our guests some of the best scenery in the world. The Lions Club will be hosting the breakfast on Thursday and Friday at the fair pavilion, this breakfast will be early and end by Sam in the morning, but all are welcome. Enjoy this wonderful cool weather, and look at the temp in Mesquite and realize what a great place we live in. Mack 0. Well kids it is about time for school to start again. Where did our summer go? He will enter the MTC on November 17, 2010 after many preparations to get ready to go. Gathering at Cannonville Park were some of his friends and family to honor him with a delicious dinner and lots of well wishes for a great mission. The Relief Society women are putting together School Kits and have posted a list of the materials needed. They say you don't have to fill a kit yourself but any donations are accepted. Saw a whole bunch of Shakespear's in town as they had a Shakespear Family Reunion this last week. The babies were so cute and there were many family and friends in the audience to witness the blessings. Herbert praised an agreement approved by the Bureau of Land Management today between the Bill Barrett Corporation, the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, Carbon County and the State of Utah. The agreement was negotiated in part by the Governor's Council on Balanced Resources. The unprecedented agreement between industry and environmentalists will allow for new oil and gas production in Carbon, Duchesne, and Uintah Counties through the West Tavaputs Natural Gas Full Field Development Plan. "This agreement is a perfect model of collaboration, and proves that when people come together with a common goal, solutions are possible," Governor Herbert said. "Through open communication and the desire of all parties to reach a mutually beneficial agreement, we see how complex issues can find resolution. We expect to build on this success in other areas of interest to better our great State." Governor Herbert created the Balanced Resource Council last fall to bring together diverse viewpoints to address a number of issues, including public lands policy, water and air quality issues, and other areas impacting Utah's natural resources. The Council's chairman is Ted Wilson, the Governor's senior adviser on environmental matters. "The proposed wilderness in the Desolation Canyon region is one of the state's most remarkable natural treasures. This agreement between SUWA, the Bill Barrett Corporation and others provides meaningful protection for this important place, while allowing the company to develop substantial natural gas," said Steve Bloch, Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance Attorney and Energy Program Director. "This is an excellent example of the win-win model that Governor Herbert and Interior Secretary Ken Salazar have promoted." The negotiated agreement allows new oil and gas production on federal land, with significantly reduced environmental impacts in the area. The Bill Barrett Corporation and others plan to drill 626 wells from 120 well pads, a reduction from the initial proposal by 181 wells and 418 pads. The company has agreed to put into place increased air quality mitigation measures and minimize the amount of surface disturbance in wilderness study areas. "Oil and gas production is critical to our energy future in Utah, but it must not happen in a way that threatens precious natural resources," the Governor said. "Energy production and environmental stewardship can co-exist, and this agreement provides a model under which it can happen." Electronic copies of the Final Environmental Impact Statement and Record of Decision for the West Tavaputs Natural Gas Full Field Development Plan are available at: http:// www.blm.gov/ut/st/en/fo/price/energy/Oil_Gas.html. |
