If he sleeps 7 hours a night, he makes $52,000 every night while visions of sugarplums dance in his head. If he goes to see a movie, it'll cost him $7.00, but he'll make $18,550 while he's there. If he decides to have a 5-minute egg, he'll make $618 while boiling it. He makes $7,415/hour more than minimum wage. If he wanted to save up for a new Acura NSX ($90,000) it would take him a whole 12 hours. If someone were to hand him his salary and endorsement money, they would have to do it at the rate of $200 every second. He'll probably pay around $200 for a nice round of golf, but will be reimbursed $33,390 for that round. He'll make about $19.60 while watching the 100-meter dash in the Olympics, and about $15,600 during the Boston Marathon. This year, he'll make more than twice as much as all U.S. past presidents for all of their terms combined. Amazing isn't it? However, If Jordan saves 100% of his income for the next 500 years, he'll still have less than Bill Gates has at this very moment. Game over. Nerd wins. really did." "I'm sure you did," I smiled. You're doing the right things now, though, Kelly, and that's what's important." "Thank you." "Plus, your girls need you." "I know," she nodded in agreement. In Joshua 24:15 we are told, "And if it seems evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." Today, Kelly's working to serve the Lord, her daughters and herself. The goal for her is to keep going. To stay on this path. To not get weak and veer off. To stay away from those she partied with. To stay away from those she purchased meth from. For her to surround herself with those that love, support and cheer her on. Even if the latter include only one or two people and not necessarily family members who often times, but not always, don't understand and can be harsh critics. Basically, Kelly needs to change her environment, friends, circumstances, situation or anything that would lead or influence her back to wanting to do meth. Anything's possible. No, everything's possible. Especially choice. Whom will you serve today? And what will you overcome? *Name has been changed. At the beginning of one semester, an innovative class breathed new life into the course by assigning baseball plays to each hackneyed phrase. For example, when the professor said, "On the other hand," that counted as a base hit. "By the same token" was a strike out; "and so on" counted as a stolen base. Divided into two teams by the center aisle of the lecture hall, the students played inning after inning of silent but vigorous baseball. On the last day of class, the impossible happened: the score was tied and bases were loaded. Then the batter hit a home run! The winning team stood and cheered wildly. Though deeply appreciative, the professor later was quoted as wondering why only half of the students had been enthusiastic about his lectures. In the dorm, one of the favorite intramural sports was water fights ... dousing and bombarding one another with water from squirt guns, glasses, balloons, even wastebaskets. Since each room had a sink, there was endless ammunition. The most frequent target was the Resident Assistant. Approaching his room one afternoon, the Resident Assistant noticed his door was ajar. Looking up, he saw a pail of water balanced on the door's edge, ready to fall on him. As he took down the pail and emptied it into his sink, he thought: Those crazy guys actually thought they could fool me with that old gag! It was then he realized that "those crazy guys" had removed the drainpipe beneath his sink. It Makes Sense...B y Veda Hale It makes sense to probe common attitudes. Panguitch has had these wonderful, enthusiastic people move in with a positive plan to improve our community. We all fell in love with them. Fine, but then we wondered, (at least I did.) "Do they belong to our Church?" "Do they have old roots in the area?" At first the woman said "no", and that was fine with me. I was amazed, but even more happy that someone from the outside would see our community in such positive light. Then the family came to visit and introduce me to the father's father and mother and to tell me that their great, great grandfather was a Hanson who helped settle Tropic. They were excited to find out more. As they left, this sparkly woman turned and with a big smile asked, "Now do you like us better?" Oh My! Didn't she know that the town had already fallen in love with her and her family? Well, cause for thought. It is human nature, to rather quickly, upon meeting someone new, want to know of any connections from the past that might help get a handle on how this person fits in our universe. "Oh, do you know ?" "Have you been....?" Things like that. However, I think after this I'll watch how I do it. I would like to make newcomers feel welcome just for themselves. I'll try to remember our experiences raising purebred cattle and realizing all that sameness wasn't doing the herd all that much good, and so we brought in Black Angus. They called it "hybrid vigor", and it did make for a more profitable and enjoyable operation. Perhaps I'll tell them how happy I am to see some "hybrid vigor" in our community and try to make them feel special in their own right, without needing connections. I'll try. But, darn it. It is still fun to dig for connections and celebrate them when found. It is something especially us women like. Still, it sure makes sense to check anything that might make a newcomer feel they would be liked better, if they had old connections. What do you think?
