Although an effective vaccine is available, it takes about a year for infants to build up adequate immunity. During this vulnerable period they can become easily infected with pertussis by adults who are not immunized. Even if adults have been immunized, whooping cough immunity can fade over time. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) now recommends that adults get a "Tdap" booster to prevent getting sick and spreading the illness to infants in the home. This is a single dose vaccine that protects against pertussis as well as tetanus and diphtheria. The Southwest Utah Public Health Department (SWUPHD) is currently offering free Tdap vaccine to anyone ages 19 through 64 who: • Has frequent contact with infants • Is uninsured, OR • has insurance that doesn't pay for immunizations "We hope parents and caregivers will take advantage of this opportunity," says Susan Peck, SWUPHD Nursing Director. "We have had whooping cough outbreaks in our community before and it's especially rough on babies, who often get it from mom, dad, or grandparents." Qualified adults can get the Tdap vaccine at no charge by visiting the SWUPHD Panguitch office (call 676-8800 for an appointment). Tdap vaccine is also available on a self-pay basis and is covered by some insurances. Children ages 10-18 can also receive Tdap boosters. A similar vaccine called DTaP is administered to children under 7 years of age. Whooping cough can seem like a common cold at first but can cause severe coughing spells that lead to vomiting, disturbed sleep, even rib fractures. The cough often has a 'whooping' sound as the person gasps for air and can last for months. Complications include weight loss, pneumonia, and hospitalization. Visit www.swuhealth.org for more information. The mission of the Southwest Utah Public Health Department is to protect the community's health through the promotion of wellness and the prevention of disease. Carmel Highway within Zion National Park. The new schedule will only have nighttime road closures. These will occur rom 8 p.m. to 8 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. Previous schedules have all included daytime closures. Weekends and holidays will remain open 24 hours a day. Although the new schedule creates some additional challenges for the project, it should mitigate frustration for travelers, help park operations, and ease economic impacts to the surrounding communities. Superintendent Whitworth stated, "We have been working with the Federal Highways Administration, area businesses, and the contractor to set a schedule to reconstruct the 80 year old Zion Mount Carmel Highway section from the switchbacks to our east entrance. We feel that the new schedule should still allow us to complete the project before winter, allow visitors to travel to and through Zion, and allow local businesses to fair well during the reconstruction process." Zion National Park will remain open for the duration of the project. People travelling to Zion National Park on State Route 9 from Interstate 15 can enjoy Zion Canyon's recreational opportunities, access the park shuttle, campgrounds, Zion Lodge, and visit Springdale without being in the construction area. Wednesday, June 23 will be the last day of the 9:00am to 4:00pm road closures. Thursday, June 24 to Sunday, June 27 at 8:00pm, the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway will be open subject to traffic control. |
