Show Page n9 201 the lAuGhiNg pOiNtr! Las Vegas So this young man, Kevin Johnson, 25, who's riding across America to not only honor his mother's memory, but to raise money for breast cancer research on his "3781 Miles for a Cure" (www.3781miles. org) trek is supposed to be staying at my house. But, he hasn't shown up yet. So, I get in my car and head to Cedar Mountain. Especially since today's the day he's scaling an almost 10,000 foot mountain. "He'll be around this bend," I say out loud even though I'm the only one in the car. But no Kevin. "He'll be around this bend," I say again. Still, no Kevin. "Heavenly Father, please let him be okay," I say even though I know that he will be. I circle Duck Creek Village. Not once, not twice, but three times. Finally I park at the west entrance. And, just as I do I see this young man riding passionately toward me. "KEVIN!" I call out and wave to him. He's actually smiling. Smiling, perhaps, because someone just recognized him on desolate Cedar Mountain. Smiling, perhaps, because he just scaled a 10,000 foot mountain. The most treacherous since the beginning of his trip in San Francisco. Smiling, perhaps, because there's a convenient store in Duck Creek Village where he can refill on water and maybe, if he's lucky, grab a Gatorade and a Cliff Barr (chocolate chip flavor) or two. Smiling, perhaps, because he really wasn't alone. His mother, Rosemary Johnson, along with friends and family names', who've either died or been affected by cancer, rest on his back. They, too, make the journey with Kevin. Every step of the way. One climb at a time. Cheering and rooting him on. "You can do this, Kevin." "You are doing this." Smiling, perhaps, because he's accomplishing what very few of us do: Living a dream. American entrepreneur, Walt Disney, said, "All of our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them." Johnson epitomizes the word courage. But there's more to him. He beams spirituality. Faith. Positivity. Hope. Goodness. Service. Love. He's Christ like beyond measure. Yes, he's living his dream. A dream that was merely a thought at first. That thought was then talked about. That thought then became action. In the movie "The Secret" we are told that when you want something you are to Ask (pray), then Believe (have faith) and finally Receive it (be grateful and thankful). This is exactly what Kevin Johnson's done. And his mother would be proud as are thousands of others, many unbeknown to Kevin. American Olympic athlete Gail Devers said, "Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe." You don't need to tell this to Kevin Johnson. You just need to learn from him. To donate to Kevin Johnson's "3781 Miles for a Cure" tour, please visit www.3781miles.org . After she returned, her husband proudly reported that he had completed every job. When Janice saw the list, however, each item except No. 5 had been crossed off. "What's this!" she exclaimed. "Didn't you think about me while I was gone?" Her chagrin vanished when he replied cheerfully, "I started to, but just never finished." A young couple honeymooning in Las Vegas had been doing very badly in the casinos. The groom told the bride, "I have a hunch that I can turn our luck around if I go down to the casino alone." Once in the casino, he put a dollar into each of two slot machines. He hit the jackpot on both of them and walked away with $10,000. He then played blackjack for a couple of hours until he had $50,000 in chips. Next, he played poker and upped his winnings to $100,000. He was about to cash in his chips when he got a hunch that his luck hadn't run out. So he took all his money and placed it on Black at the roulette table, hoping to double his money. The ball landed on Double Zero. He returned to his room. His bride asked, "How did you do?" The groom shrugged and said, "I lost two dollars." Dental Forms At the dentist's office for oral surgery, I was handed a couple of forms to fill out. As I signed the first one, I joked with the receptionist, "Does this say that even if you pull my head completely off, I can't sue you?" "No, that's the next sheet. This one says you still have to pay us." It Makes Sense...By Veda Vale Panguitch folks have a new thing to be excited about. Mark and Heather Childs from Las Vegas have bought the old Gem Theater. We locals have a rare chance to bask in their enthusiasm. Anytime one can find the real thing, real enthusiasm, it is like finding a gold mine. It is someplace to visit and visit and take away riches, this time for the spirit. This ambitious young couple and their two boys plan to open an old-fashioned ice cream parlor. Besides that, they will show many free movies. Yes, I said "free". And besides even that, they will host many other kinds of programs, like dramas, lectures and whatever else that could help us feel some of the old community spirit. And they will have computers available in the balcony along with a museum where we can look back and remember. Some place to go! ! Some place to entice us off our couches and out to interact with our friends and neighbors! To help them, all of us who were here when the theater was so much of our lives ought to share our memories and particularly pictures that will help them being back the place the way it once looked. It makes sense to help others with their dreams. If we help then we sort-of claim a tiny bit of something like ownership. It is like a man I talked to once near Panguitch Lake. He said of an old, dead tree. "I was here and saw that tree get hit by lightening. I always visit it when I come back every year." He felt a connection because of shared history. Legal ownership isn't the only way to connect to places. So here's to the next generation having a place that will be part of their happy growing-up years; and, for the rest of us, we have an opportunity to feel young again by Itc-= la„ Errol - 435-275-8628 - embutah@gmail.com participating in something near to what we had as young. And then to get yummy, natural ice cream, too. Way to go, Panguitch! Send suggestions to Veda Hale Box 956, Panguitch, Utah When did the first powered, controlled, sus84759 or email vedahale@hotmail.com tained flight take place? And who was the 'pilot?' (Share with the kids...and, then, have them share @ school...Especially the `doozy at the bottom) La La &Alta Dt FIRST FLIGHT Henri Giffard The first powered, controlled, sustained flight took place 50 years before the Wright brothers, in 1852 (Henri Giffard flew 15 miles with a steam engine mounted on a dirigible). (Photo below) He went nearly 100 times as far as the Wright brothers did. The Zeppelins were powered as well, of course, but the first powered heavier-than-air flight took place in 1890 (Clement Ader, steam engine on bat-winged monoplane, 60 yards). (2nd Photo Below) The Wrights' 1903 flight (300 yards) was the first photographed heavier-than-air flight. [ not quite true; there exist photos of Lilienthal's nonpowered heavier-than-air flights in the 1890s. (3rd Photo Below) After the advent of relatively light combustion engines (such as Benz, Otto, Diesel), other pioneers pursued similar approaches, but no photographs were taken by Richard Pearse (New Zealand, March 1903) and Karl Jatho (August 1903). Finally, the Wrights needed headwinds or catapults to start their planes, so they were not fully self-powered. But Brazil's Santos-Dumont was (1906, first official airplane flight).
