Show The Garfield County Insider June 3, 2010 EverylCounts Instead React People do you wrong. You wrong people. Sometimes intentionally. Hopefully, most times, unintentionally. It's a fact. It's life. But how you act or react when someone wrongs you is the real question. Do you, as we are told in Matthew 5:44, "...love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them that which despitefully use you, and persecute you" or do you stoop to their level and get them back somehow? Why do people wrong you? Why do you wrong people? Some reasons include hurt feelings, embarrassment or humiliation, power, lack of information or understanding, status, habit, insecurity, or even the need to have the last word. None of these reasons are justified. Are there ever any times that they are? American author, Anais Nin, said, "From the backstabbing co-worker to the meddling sister-in-law, you are in charge of how you react to the people and events in your life. You can either give negativity power over your life or you can choose happiness instead. Take control and choose to focus on what is important in your life. Those who cannot live fully often become destroyers of life." Recently I was the second to last person boarding a flight —the C gate was on my boarding pass when I was to leave through the B gate-- with two pieces of canyon luggage. One would need to be placed in an overhead compartment and the other underneath my seat. I eventually found Without hesitation he jumped to his feet wanting to help conclude this episode. "Thank you so much," I smiled. "Sure, no problem," he returned the smile. "Thank you, again," I smiled to the woman. Sheepishly she smiled, at least, seeming embarrassed for her adult tantrum. American motivational author and speaker, Dr. Wayne W. Dyer said, "How people treat you is their karma; how you react is yours." So, what is your karma? How would you have acted or reacted if you were the woman with the bag? How would you have acted or reacted if you had been me? American football player and coach, Tom Landry said, "Leadership is a matter of having people look at you and gain confidence, seeing how you react. If you're in control, they're in control." When you're in control doors are opened and you set a good example. When you're not in control you sabotage relationship and opportunities. So the next time you want to react, act instead. And, "Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you," (Luke 6:28). Since, said American motivational speaker and author, Zig Ziglar, "When you respond to life, that's positive; when you react to life, that's negative." a vacant spot. Except there was a challenge: A small plastic bag was taking up a very large space. So I kindly asked the woman sitting directly below, "Is this your bag?" "Yes it is," she said sternly and without eye contact. "Would you mind if I moved it a little so that I can put my luggage here?" "Well, I put my bag there because that's where I want it," she said more sternly and still with no eye contact. Meanwhile, everyone around us was quietly watching how this situation was going to pan out. I was also wondering the same thing. So was the gentleman behind me who was the last to board. "Your bag can still fit, there's just also room for a piece of luggage," I persisted. "I put it there for a reason," she stated as her cold eyes daggered into mine. At this point, everyone knew that if she didn't allow my luggage to go there that the flight attendants would be asking her the same questions within minutes. So I continued, "Is there any way that you can put your bag under your seat?" "My purse is under my seat... oh, alright," she screeched as she undid her seatbelt, got out of her seat and dramatically grabbed her bag from the overhead bin slamming her bottom Cynthia Kimball Humback down into her seat. phreys is a professional "Thank you so much," I speaker and trainer through told her touching her shoul- her company EverylCounts, der, smiling and trying to LLC. An example of this comes one Sunday morning after the preacher had just finished his sermon. He went and sat down with his wife and she asked him how he thought the church service went. The Preacher shrugged and said, "The worship was excellent, and I think the prayer and communion times went quite well, but," he continued, "I just don't think the sermon ever got off the ground." The wife looked over at him, and before she could stop herself, she said, "Well, it sure did taxi long enough!" KETCHUP BOTTLE Sally was trying hard to get the ketchup out of the bottle. During her struggle the phone rang so she asked her 5-year-old daughter to answer the phone. "Mommy can't come to the phone to talk to you right now. She's hitting the bottle." PROSPECTIVE JUROR A prospective juror in a Dallas District Court was surprised by the definition of voluntary manslaughter given to the panel: "An intentional killing that occurs while the defendant is under the immediate influence of sudden passion arising from an adequate cause, such as when a spouse's mate is found in a 'compromising position.'" "See, I have a problem with that 'passion business'," responded the jury candidate. "During my first marriage, I came in and found my husband involved with my neighbor. All I did was divorce him. I had no idea that I could have shot him." She wasn't selected for the jury. It Makes Sense...B y Veda Hale Every now and then I need a little nudge to remember to do some of the winning things I used to do. Blanch Pendleton, seems to have been a reader of this column back in the days when Vira Judge was still doing it. Blanch sent me a column she had suggested back then and it is worth repeating. It made me take a second look because I have powdered milk that needs to be used. The suggestion is the recipe for a mix for white sauce that gets you cooking with a different turn. Simply mix together 4 cups dry milk, 3 cups all purpose flour and 4 teaspoons salt, then with a pastry whip, blend in 2 cups of butter or margarine. Store in an airtight container in a cool place, preferably the refrigerator. Now, when you want a basic white sauce, blend a half cup of the mix with a cup of water. Bring to COLOR COUNTRY NURSERY 378 W. Center, Panguitch Closed on occassion. Call Ahead 676-8301 or cell 616-8301 a boil, stirring constantly. (There will be small lumps at first, but the heat and the stirring gets them out).Season as desired with pepper and herbs, or for a cheese sauce, stir in a half cup or more of shredded Cheddar or American cheese. Add a teaspoon of curry powder and you have a delicious curry. (Good. I've been trying to find an easy way to use curry, because it has turmeric in it and turmeric is one of the newest health food crazes. One of the guesses as to why the Indians and some East Asians have less of many ailments common to people in the west.) Cream of chicken soup: Simmer in a pint of water a cup each of finely chopped onion and celery and a cup and a half of your white sauce mix. Add chopped chicken and 4 cups of reconstituted milk. Simmer five minutes more. Season to taste with chicken bouillon granules, garlic salt and table salt if needed. Try your hand at inventing other kinds of soup. Potatoes au gratin: Layer cooked potatoes and cream sauce with cheese in a casserole dish. Sprinkle seasoned bread crumbs on top. Bake until bubbly and sightly brown. The one I like best, because I'm always trying to tease myself into eating more vegetables, is called "Exotic vegetables": Serve carrots, broccoli, celery, green beans, etc. in cream sauce with or without cheese. If desired, top with seasoned crumbs and bake.
