GARFIELD MEMORIAL HOSPITAL ANNOUNCES 2010 NURSING EXCELLENCE AWARD WINNER Ramona Sorenson, RN, has been awarded Garfield Memorial Hospital's (GMH) 2010 Nursing Excellence Award. Ramona was honored along with two other nurses from Intermountain's Southwest Region and represented GMH at Intermountain's Nursing Excellence Luncheon on May 26. Ramona was nominated for this award by several colleagues and managers at GMH. The award is given to nurses who exemplify the qualities and attributes Florence Nightingale taught in her writings. Ramona started working as a licensed practical nurse at GMH 28 years ago and became a registered nurse (RN) soon after. As GMH's longest-serving RN, she has been the backbone of its nursing staff. Her skills and knowledge are incomparable, particularly in a rural setting. She is a great resource to the entire hospital and clinic staff, helping out wherever and whenever she's needed. She is a great teacher, whether it is nutritional education for a patient with a newly diagnosed diverticulitis or teaching a child how to use crutches. Ramona takes the time to get to know patients and their needs. She is an excellent advocate for the patients and shows great concern for their every need. As a rural RN she is also a case manager, travel agent, respiratory therapist, counselor, phlebotomist, delivery girl, cook, and the list goes on. Ramona and Craig, her husband, have 21 grandchildren. Medberry was fishing yesterday afternoon with a friend at approximately 12:00 p.m. Medberry threw the anchor overboard, but the fishing line was tangled with the anchor and it caused the boat to capsize. Both men were thrown into the water, the temperature of which was estimated to be around 40 degrees. Medberry's friend was able to make it to shore, but Medberry was overcome by the frigid water temperature and drowned. Paramedics arrived at the scene at approximately 12:30 p.m. but were unable to revive Medberry. Medberry's friend was treated for hypothermia at Garfield Memorial Hospital and released. Garfield County Sheriff Danny Perkins says "With Memorial Day weekend coming up we are very concerned that the thousands who come to our county to enjoy the outdoors use every safety precaution. Mr. Medberry and his friend had life vests in their boat, but unfortunately neither had them on when the boat turned over. The spring weather has been unseasonably cold which also means the water is going to be extremely cold. If you are fishing, rafting, canoeing, or doing anything near the water please remember to put a life vest on yourself and put one on each family member as well. Make sure your children and everyone in your group have their life vests on, because the water is absolutely treacherous and we want to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable time in the out of doors in our county." r 9 -12, 201 JunePan itch.
