Show The Garfield County Insider EXPLORE ESCACANTE jana@exploreesca ante.com Mogul Wrestlers From Left to Right: Assistant Coach Chris Christiansen, Manager Kelsey Torgersen, Wrestlers: Casey "Gus" Torgersen, Ryan Brooks, Neil Owens, Bret Brooks, and Coach Paul Dodge Utah General Session 2010 - S.J.R. 1 ESCALANTE HERITAGE HOLE-IN-THE-ROCK CENTER JOINT RESOLUTION This joint resolution of the Legislature expresses support for the construction of a Heritage Center in Escalante, Utah, and for improvements to the Holein-the-Rock Road, to highlight the journey of the San Juan/Hole-in-the-Rock colonizing expedition during the winter of 1879-80 and to preserve the history of the most difficult colonizing expedition in all of the West. This resolution: expresses support for the Escalante Heritage Center's effort to preserve the history of the Hole-in-the-Rock pioneers, the history of the early explorations of the Escalante Valley, and the settlement of the town Escalante in 1876 through the heroic efforts of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to follow the call of their leader to colonize and tame a part of the frontier; and expresses support for improving safety and year round travel on the Hole-inthe-Rock Road. This resolution has passed both the Utah House and Senate and is headed to the Governor's desk for a signature. Jr. Jazz basketball is finishing up their season and Denise Olsen would like to say how proud she is of our youth for working hard and doing their best no matter what the circumstances. She was in the St. George area a few weeks ago and watched a basketball game that her 7 year old nephew was playing. It's always fun to watch the kids have so much fun out there doing their best as they are learning to play sports. The sad part was when the two coaches started to get irate with each other over the game and came close to throwing punches. Most of the kids were not even aware of this and were just having a good time. The parents in the stands, however, were about ready to take their kids home right at that moment. I would have agreed, but I felt the kids shouldn't be the ones to have to suffer based on an adult's lack of emotional control. It really made me think how fortunate we are in Escalante to have such great youth learning good sportsmanship. She's a big believer in sports and the life lessons it teaches. The old cliché is true: It's not whether you win or lose, its how you play the game! After watching the Moqui's and the mini-Moqui's (the 3rd & 4th graders) and all the other kids playing Jr. Jazz basketball, Denise is proud to say they've done their best no matter the game situation. She thinks they've all had a good time, learned good sportsmanship and improved greatly over the season. Thanks to all the wonderful coaches, parents & many others that volunteer their valuable time for these kids. Heard of geocaching? If not, you should visit http:// www.geocaching.com. These wonderful treasure hunts are family entertainment and free. You need a GPS device and an adventurous soul. There are currently 4 treasure hunts on the website for Escalante. Read about the rules and get started. High Adventure ATV's rents their units with a GPS. On the geocaching site there are links to websites where you can purchase a Jr. model good for geocaching. You can register on their website for free and then log in your experiences. Join their Cache In and Trash Out Environmental Project and/or start your own geocache. Several merchants have cooperated in putting together a map of the treasures of Escalante. They should arrive this week and be available around town. Watch for them — Escalante, Heart of the Grand Staircase. Cowboy Blues reopens Friday, Feb. 26th with their 9th Anniversary openingspecial Their Rib Special for $9.99.
