Some interesting history: The VIII Olympic Winter Games took place over Feb. 18-28, 1960 at Squaw Valley and Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. From 30 counttries around the world, 665 athletes gathered over 11 days to engage in five recognized Olympic winter sports contested in 27 events. These sports and events included alpine skiing, Nordic combined, cross-coun-try skiing, biathlon, figure skating, speed skating, ice hockey and ski jumping. (no Luge, no Skeleton, no Snow-boarding, no Curling!) Here for the first time we saw elaborate Olympic pageantry in the Opening Ceremonies and venue decorations instilled by the creative force of Pageantry Chairman Walt Disney. The "Miracle of Squaw Valley" astonishes spectators during the opening ceremonies. CBS payed $50,000 to broadcast the first live TV of the Olympics...Instant Replay was introduced and scoring was computerized! (NBC has contracted for both the 2010 Winter Games aswell as the 2012 Summer event for the sum of: TWO BILLION DOLLARS ! !!) The USOC is hoping for the 2022 WO to be back at Squaw Valley!) For the first time in Olympic history, the venues and athlete residence halls are located in a cornpact intimate setting that encourages sportsmanship and socializing among nations. Drama unfolds as a largely pickup team of American ice hockey players become the "Team of Destiny." They fight to an unbeaten record, defeat the Soviets and come from behind late in the championship game to capture their country's first gold medal. (Remember the Miracle-1980?) Squaw Valley featured the debut of the Biathalon (sking & shooting) and of speed skating events for female contestants. Carol Heiss got the Gold forfigure skating (below) David Jenkins to the Gold for men... Now, 2010, we have multiple channels, 100's of hours and dazzeling young athletes doing things with their bodies and new equppment that is almost startling in their implementation. We, including grandchildren, thoroughly enjoyed both the various Snow Boarding venues as well and the mind-blowing speed skating. Then, of course there is the Medal Count... Not bad, huh?? Piute wanted to show the world that they were the best by killing a badly overmatched Duchene team. The Lady Birds were ahead by 21 at half and we left when they were ahead by 40. Piute record was 23-0 and most of the games weren't close. I believe that this was the Thunderbirds first Championship, you did good Ladies. Lady Bobcats take 4th at State. The Bobcats matched up with St. Joseph the first day and won 45-27. This set them up with a tough Altamont team on Thursday. The Lady Cats pulled away with a tough 37-30 win. This put us in the semifinal game with Duchene. We had lost to Duchene in the first game of the season. The game was a battle all the way, with the lead changing back and forth, with neither team leading by more than 4 points. The Cats missed going to the finals by 2 points losing to Duchene 46-44, it was a real fun game to watch. The Ladies played Rich for third place and again it was a closely fought battle but came up short 42-37. The Lady Bobcats had a great season, losing only to Piute, Duchene and Rich. Coach Barney would like to thank all the many fans that came out to support the Girls throughout the year. A big thanks to Seniors Chelsie Barney, Shelby Taylor and Kari Owens for all their hard work over the years. These girls will be real hard to replace. Bryce Valley lost their first game by two points, but ran the table taking the next three and ended up in 6th place, way to go Mustangs. The Bobcats ended their season with two real big victories over Milford and Wayne. Milford had beaten us earlier on their court, but our seniors Brooks Leach and Eric Frandsen had a field day. We won 73 to 49. Eric scored a game high 25 points, Riley Miller with 15 and Brooks Leach who was all over the court finished with 13. I did not see the game in Wayne or what the score was, but I did hear from Hammer that Eric Frandsen had a game of his life. He finished with 38 points and 18 rebounds in the victory. The Bobcats played Escalante last night and will be playing in the region finals in Cedar City at Canyon View High, tonight Thursday February 25, and Friday night. The play-in games for State start on March 1 &2 with the finals starting on the 3rd through the 6th. State will be at Richfield this year. The Bobcats mighty men wrestlers came away with a 6th place finish at state. Altamont took 1st followed by Monticello. Jory Owens took first place in 103# division, Cade Coles 3rd at 112#, Nick Burns 145# took third, and Big John Mudge took 4th in the giants 285# division. Matt Houston and Kory Owens did a great job with a very young team. Look for great things from this team in the future. Caleb Holman had a triple over time which finally went to his opponent. Kory Owens says that they have over 60 youth signed up for bantam wrestling, what a great way to build up their program.
