Show B8 Sports Monday • September 29, 2008 Making Headlines Armstrong joins Astana Clough leadsby example For the third consecutive week, Utah Valley University goalkeeper Mallory Schott has been named the Great West Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday. The senior from Vancouver, Washington, continued to hold up the back line for Utah Vailey despite a 0-2 week for the Wolverines at the Idaho State Classic. Schott collected six saves in a 1-0 loss against Wyoming and then collected eight saves in the 2-1 loss to UC Davis. Schott kept the Wolverines in both games despite being out shot 18-6, while playing all 180 minutes in the net and collecting a .824 saves percentage. South Dakota's Sarah Halbach earned the Offen: sive Player of the Week. UVU will travel to Flagstaff, Arizona, to face New Mexico on Friday and Northern Arizona on Sunday before returning home to host Idaho on Friday, Oct. 3. Millen out fn Detroit After starting another fruitless NFL season 0-3, the Detroit Lions fired team president Matt Millen. Under Millen the Lions have had the worst record in the league at 31 -84, a mere .270 winning percentage since 2001. After Bill Ford Jr., son of Lions owner William Clay Ford, made comments about firing Millen, the action was carried out on Wednesday by the elder Ford. Women's Golf Moves Up on Final Day in Idaho Dave Iba/ UVU Review Clough's tough play and knack for the net has helped the Wolverines to an unbeaten home record. At week's end, both the women's soccer and volleyball teams were undefeated at home, something that hasn't always been the case for the Wolverines. After surviving in overtime to remain unbeaten at home, the lady Wolverine soccer team went on the road where they lost two of three — a 3-2 win in Cedar City over Southern Utah University, followed by back-to-back losses to Wyoming and UC Davis. The Wolverine volleyball team has been a much better team in the friendly confines of the Shurian Activities Center staying undefeated at home by defeating Weber State to improve to 3-0 at home after a 0-5 start. Luckily enough for UVU, its next three matches are at home, where the Wolverines are a much stronger team. The reason for superior play at home is consistent throughout sports at all levels of competition. Whether it's the fans in the seats, favorable calls or just familiarity with the surroundings, it's an apparent advantage to be at home. As a small school with upset potential, it's harder for respected teams to agree to play at UVU and risk losing to a relatively unknown institution. Therefore, the tougher games on the Wolverines schedule in any sport take place on the road. As Utah Valley will enter play in the Great West Conference in the coming years, it will be easier to fill a schedule with home games throughout the year. Schott again repeats as Defensive Player of the Week In need of a team after announcing his return to the sport of cycling to race In the 2009 Tour de France, seven-time Tour winner Lance Armstrong announced that he will ride for team Astatna. The move was anticipated, as Armstrong's long time team director Johan Bruyneel will be guiding him through the race after leading Lance in his seven wins. In an effort to prove his innocence in doping allegations, Armstrong has hired an anti-doping expert to test him at any time and post the results on the Internet. If Armstrong wins, he will break his own record for most Tour wins. Home sweet home Sports Briefs Football home evening heavy meal because games are late. Her dominance on the field is apparent and individually with the team. "I often see her with individual players and they go to her for advice, or she sees something that could help a player," Anderson said. "She sees something that could help a teammate — in just a few words, she can build that player up and make a correction and it motivates that player." Jenni has mixed feelings about finishing her soccer career at UVU, She says she might be bored after constantly playing for 11 straight years of soccer. Though she is optimistic, she plans to graduate from UVU in exercise science and coach basketball. If she had an opportunity to coach soccer, she would coach soccer, but finds her niche as a basketball coach. "I see those good coaching qualities in what she does with the team. 1 think she can be very successful as a coach." Anderson said. "I am ' really glad I have the opportunity to come to (UVU) and coach her. She is a coach's dream. She works very hard and sets the standard for the team. She holds herself to a higher standard than the other players would. The younger players see that and see how she trains and she just is a great example for them. She has great grades and studies hard." An antidote to boredom held at the art wall, opposite Sports writer the bookstore. Soccer falls in second straight loss Freshman Ashley Burdett scored her first career goal but for the second straight game Utah Valley came up a goal short as UC Davis scored a 2-1 win over the Wolverines at the Idaho State Classic on Sunday. Burden's goal came in the 43rd minute with the Wolverines (4-2-1) already down two goals. After a Jenni Clough shot was saved by the Aggies' Sarah Peters, Burdett followed with her goal to get UVU on the board. UC Davis (4-2-1) got goals from Marisa Boge (19th minute) and Rochelie VanBuskirk (28th minute) on a play where the goalkeeper, Peters, got an assist. Like in Friday's 1-0 loss to Wyoming, the Wolverines struggled to find offensive firepower. UC Davis out-shot UVU 23-6 overall and 11-3 in shots on goal. i |
