Show sports B5 MONDAY SEPTEMBER 10 • 2007 HALL from TEAM from B6 an even better record than the 22-7 they had in 2006. This year's team has five of last year's key contributors returning, including leading scorer Ryan Toolson. He buried teams from behind the arc in the first half of last season and when teams decided to try and stop his outside game, he took the ball inside. Both worked well for him by the end of last year. Weaker teams can often mean weaker defenses, which could translate into more scoring for Toolson. The competition may not be the greatest to watch this season when Utah Valley's premier sport kicks off in Novem- ber, but the team will be fun to watch if for no other reason than Joe Walker. Walker is an excitable, energetic shot blocker. A mid-season injury kept him out of a few games, including at Utah State after getting into some yelling matches with some of the fans. Walker had a few good games last year and this year, again against weaker teams. I believe he will play with even more enthusiasm. If you like watching coaches get into it. Hunsaker is among the best of them. Whatever the reason, it will be worth watchinsi. take a couple of hits to calm me down," Hall said. "It was good to get out there, play football again and take a couple hits." Hall, replacing a second-round NFL draft pick in John Beck, threw two touchdowns later in the half, giving BYU a 14-0 half time lead. Hall finished his first collegiate 26-for-39 with 288 yards and two touchdowns. He did benefit when Wilrey Fontenot dropped a would-be interception in the second quarter. "Max Hall came out and showed he is capable at running this team today," receiver Austin Collie said. "He did extremely well, especially with the leadership role, coming out and taking charge. He put on a show today." Hall missed opportunities on a few deep passes, but having Harvey Unga come out of the backfield and catch nine pass- es for 127 yards helped the young quarterback. "We have some pretty good running backs. We lost Curtis Brown, the alltime leading rusher, but guys stepping in are going to be great guys too. Guys we can go to," Hall said. The Cougars got Manase Tonga back against UCLA to add to its depth at running back and help Hall even more as he learns more about playing college football. BYU's program wasn't in a similar place when Beck ran the offense in his first start. Against Stanford, with Gary Crowton as head coach, Beck went 22-for-45 with a touchdown and an interception in a loss in 2003. Fans haven't seen much of Hall yet. but after one game, he looked like he was ready to take over the offense despite the mistakes every first year quarterback is bound to make. "It was like, in the second half, if we went three and out I wasn't worried about it. I knew we would get the ball back." The Cougars defense learned more of where it's at compared to where the team wants it to be against No. 13 UCLA and former OWLZ from B5 by Donato Giovanatto put the Owlz up 2-0 early on. Orem scored five runs in the inning before the stadium was evacuated due to a severe thunderstorm warning in the area. With a full count on Owlz designated hitter Gordie Gronkowski, the spectators were asked to vacate the premises just minutes before the wind and rain really began to pick up. Huddled in the confines of Brent Brown Ballpark, the players waited nearly two hours before play resumed. On a saturated field, Idaho Falls cut into the Owlz lead with two runs in the fourth inning. In what will be a rematch of last year's first round playoff series, the Owlz will take on the Chuckers. Last year, the defending Pioneer League champion Orem Owlz were upset by the Chuckers in the first round of the playoffs thus spoiling Orem's quest for a third straight title. The Owlz hoped to return the favor and complete an upset bid this year. BYU transfer quarterback Ben Olscn on Saturday in the Rose Bowl. After the first game of the year. Cougar players and coaches talked about making it to a BCS bowl game this year. To go that far BYU needs the defense to be more than the other side of the ball.
