Show /port/ D2 MONDAY • JANUARY 22 • 2007 Senior shooter leading the way SPORTS on TV JANUARY 22-27 Dave Giilespie Sports Writer Who has sacrificed with UVSC Coach Dick Hunsaker from the beginning? What player comes to mind when UVSC fans think of their team? The answer? David Heck, no doubt about it. Heck has invested and been invested in by UVSC, dripping blood for the green and yellow and Coach Hunsaker. "As much as Ronnie Price is a poster player [for UVSC], David Heck is a staple to [UVSC's] foundation [as a Division I program]," Hunsaker said. Heck was born and raised in Arlington, Texas where he prepped at James Bowie High School. The 6-7 forward started 34 games as a senior and nearly averaged a doubledouble with 15 points and nine rebounds a game. And showing his all-around skill level, the lanky Texan put out three assists and two blocks as well. "David's gift is basketball sense. He sees the game so well. Every key play [we run] goes through [him]," said Coach Hunsaker. Recruited through mutual friends of Heck's family and Coach Hunsaker, David arrived in Orem to play in the 2003 seasonthe Wolverine's first as a Division I Independent-but the coach wasn't so sure about his new recruit. "We debated long and hard about whether to offer a scholarship. He was gangly and unsure, but he had skill, a shot and size." That first season in Orem, Heck averaged 4.9 points a game and steadily improved year to year. Heck nearly doubled his freshman campaign by upping his scoring ante to 9.4. And then last season, the once "gangly and unsure" freshman led the team in scoring with 11.2 PPgBut improvement on the court isn't what sets Heck apart from the rest. While seemingly shy on the court and anywhere else you might catch the him, he has shown an ability to be there for his teammates when they are down. As Hunsaker proclaimed, Heck has "stability" on the court with teammates and as a friend. In addition to improving on the court, the senior has improved academically, semester by semester, and will receive a degree. But despite the degree, UVSC's fifth year coach believes David Heck has what it takes to up his game to the next level. "He has an opportunity Chad Clark/NetXNews to continue basketball beyond UVSC. It may be David Heck pulls up for a jumper that ended in a threehalf way around the world, point play for UVSC against Longwood. Heck led UVSC with 20 points in the 80-52 win. but it is on the horizon." If that happens, maybe Price will have to. share some billboard space. We Know it's Big. A few guys who worked out recently that haven't had the experience but were nonetheless qualified to lead a team include Lovie Smith, Sean Payton, Eric Mangini, Mike Nolan and others.
