Show career fair C4 Improve your resume Marsha Haynes Counselor/Manager Career Services & Student Employment Not getting any job interviews? The problem could be your resume. The purpose of a resume is to help you get a job interview. Your resume is a self-marketing tool—a kind of personal advertisement—that shows off your job skills and their value to a future employer. If you were in a bookstore and an attractive book cover caught your attention, you would pick up the book to inspect it further. ; The same is true of f. resume. If you make the resume attractive, •interesting, dynamic, and 6uccess-oriented,employers will want to know more about the product and in turn will call you for an interview. Some common headings for a resume include: Objective Statement, Summary of Qualifications, Education, Work Experience, and Other Experience. The most important part in writing a resume is to target it to the job you are applying for. Does this mean you will need to change your resume for each job you apply for? The answer is yes! Look at the job description to get clues for what the employer is looking for and match those up with your own skills and abilities. Choose five or six main things about yourself that would be appealing to an employer and make sure they are highlighted in your resume. A common mistake students make when putting together a resume is to write their work experience like a job description. If you want your resume to stand out, write accomplishment statements instead of chronological obituaries. Use action verbs such as coordinated, directed, organized, developed, to begin each statement. Remember, these statements are phrases; leave out the subject and just tell what you did. Employers want to know what you have done in the past as an indicator of what you can do for them in the future. There is no need to tell your whole life story. Critically evaluate all your activities and experiences and determine which are relevant to your current career goals and which are not. Only include what matters and try to keep it to one page. One hundred percent perfection is the standard. Have someone look over your resume before you submit it to make sure there are no spelling or grammatical errors. Counselors in Career Services and Student Employment (located in BA113) will review your resume and give you suggestions for improvement for no charge. Now is the time to get your resume updated and looking professional so you will be ready for the Career and Internship Fair on Tuesday, Jan. 30.
