Show 2006HOLIDAY SEASON SECTION •'.N;^.1-.*^-,+*-i .-r^-^' PRESENTED BY THE COLLEGE TIMES Different ways that you can try on Santas. hatth year John Ditzler College Times U VSC's Center for Service and Learning (CSL) hopes students and faculty will choose one of the many volunteer opportunities sponsored through the center this holiday season. CSL Director, Alexis Palmer, said, "A student came in the other day and said, 'I don't have a girlfriend right now, I don't have anybody to spend money on, put me in contact with a family I can buy presents for.*" Each year the CSL, through the Sub-for-Santa program, pairs about a hundred sponsors with as many families who otherwise might not have much in the way of holiday presents. Sponsors choose a family and purchase gifts for specific people they have never met. According to Palmer each of the families sponsored come from UVSC, either students or faculty with chil- dren, who are spread thin financially. "All the giving stays right here, were helping our community, our neighbors," said Palmer. Palmer said, "Often times parents write in and tell us, 'Don't get anything for me, but could you help us to get a few presents for our children." Sponsors are encouraged to provide a toy, book and two items of clothing for each child. The Orem K-Mart (475 N. State Street) will give sponsors 10 percent off of all purchases for UVSC Sub-forSanta families December 2 from 6-8 a.m., following which the Orem Institute of Religion will host a break- fast for Sub-for-Santa sponsors and volunteers at 8 a.m. to wrap gifts. In conjunction with the Orem Institute of Religion, the CSL will host a food drive November 20 - Dec. 1. Food can be dropped off in the CSL office located in the Sorensen Center, room 101, or in designated boxes across campus.
