The ''Great American Smokeout" has been held on the third Thursday in November for three decades, this year falling on Nov. 16. "The American Cancer Society is here to help smokers who want to quit. ' Over the last 30 years, the health benefits of quitting have become more obvious. Research shows that smoking causes lung cancer, cardiovascular disease and emphysema. Lung cancer is still the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women, claiming the lives of an estimated 162,460 Americans this year. In the U.S., tobacco use is responsible for nearly one in five deaths, or approximately 435,000 lives, annually. There are immediate benefits when one quits smoking. Twenty minutes after one quits, their blood pressure drops. Twelve hours after quitting, their carbon monoxide levels drop to normal. Two weeks to three months after quitting, circulation improves and lung function increases. One year after quitting, the excess risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker. Quitting helps stop the • damaging effects of tobacco on one's appearance, including premature wrinkles, bad breath, stained teeth, gum disease, bad smelling clothes and hair, and yellow fingernails. After quitting, food tastes better, one's sense of smell returns and one no longer is winded after daily activities. There'll be more money saved, too!
