Show your new/ MONDAY • NOVEMBER 20 • 2006 A3 Kurt Bestor returns to UVSC John Ditzler Executive Editor The general scholarship fund for the UVSC School of Humanities Arts & Social Sciences will be getting another boost by way of a benefit concert featuring well-known composer and Orem native and Kurt Bestor next week. A Kurt Bestor Christmas: A Celebration ofLife: A Celebration of Life presented by the Central Utah Cancer Center will be held for the second consecutive year at the McKay Events Center at 7 p.m. on Mon., Nov. 27. The concert will include some of Bestor's original arrangements of Christmas favorites as well as a piece specially composed for local cancer survivors. lit has really made it possible for us to provide scholarship funding for some more of our students,! said William Bridges, the assistant dean for the School of Humanities Arts & Social Sciences. Bridges along with a counselor at TRiO Student Services Support at UVSC, Nancy Cannon, was one of the primary contacts who approached Bestor about performing the concert last year. Our biggest fundraisers in the past year have been for scholarships. We are dedicated to providing more scholarships to assist students to complete their education at UVSC, in the School of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences. Last year's Kurt Bestor concert raised approximately $20,000 for scholarships. With this year's proceeds, we will be in a position to endow a music scholarship, said Barbara Hammond, assistant dean for external relations for the School of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences iLast year Kurt put on an excellent family show,? said Hammond. iKurt is an exceptional composer, pianist and performer and does an excellent job drawing the audience into his concert performances.! Like last year the Central Utah Cancer Center purchased 2,000 tickets to the concert which they have distributed to local cancer survivors. Tickets are starting at $10, with family tickets available for $40 for six immediate family members, with additional tickets available for immediate family members at $5 each. UVSC to host U.S. Ambassador of Guatemala Ambassador of Guatemala to the U.S. Jose" Guillermo Castillo will be speaking Nov. 20 at 11 a.m. in the Liberal Arts building, room 225 in an event sponsored by the Office of International Affairs and the Butler Institute for International Understanding. "Because of experiences with Utahans in Guatemala, Castillo has had a desire to become acquainted with Utah's government, culture, religions and economics," Rusty Butler, associate vice president of International Affairs, said, "Utah has always had a fairly large Guatemalan population, and an interest in international affairs with Guatemala." Castillo will speak on the competition for the Latin America spot on the United Nations Security Council Guatemala recently had with Venezuela. With a two-thirds vote required to win, the two nations were deadlocked through several rounds of voting in the U.N. General Assembly. With both parties showing no sign of withdrawal, Panama was eventually elected on Nov. 7 as a compromise choice between Venezuela and U.S.-backed Guatemala. Castillo will also discuss the state of relations between Guatemala and the U.S. Ambassador Castillo previously served as minister and vice minister of economy in charge of trade issues. While serving as a delegate of the Ministry of Economy, he also coordinated and completed negotiations for a free trade agreement with Mexico. During his stay in Utah, Castillo will visit with Governor Jon Huntsman Jr. and members of the legislature in Salt Lake City, and visit the 2002 Winter Olympic sites in Park City, Utah. Children's Choir to perform on campus The highly decorated and accaimed International Children's Choir, an internationally-acclaimed and decorated children's choir based out of Utah, will perform in the UVSC Sorensen Center Ragan Theater Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. The International Children's Choir, under the direction of Dr. Kathy Sorensen, recently represented the United States and Utah in the fourth annual World Choir Games in Xiamen, China. "We had the unique opportunity of inviting the choir to UVSC and they accepted," said Maryna Storrs, coordinator of International Affairs at UVSC. "We're really excited to host them." The choir was one of more than 400 choirs from 80 countries. They were awarded two Gold Diplomas and two Bronze Medals. The group also sang for the Festival of Lights in Washington D.C. with Kurt Bestor, and was featured in the nationally-touring production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat with Donny Osmond. Professor of art to present on renaissance terracotta sculpture UVSC professor of art and visual communications Steve Bule will be the featured guest speaker at the Phoenix Museum of Art in Phoenix, Arizona, Nov. 18 for a community celebration of art. Bule will deliver a 40-minute lecture on a 15th century Renaissance terracotta sculpture by Andrea Delia Robbia, which the museum recently purchased. "For me, it's a real honor and it's a great honor to represent UVSC and be recognized on the academic level," Bule said. Bule earned a Ph.D. in history . of art from Ohio State University, a BA in history of art and a BA in Italian from Brigham Young University. Dr. Bule specializes in Italian Renaissance art history, primarily researching archives in Italy. Bule's most recently published research focuses on the process of Italian Renaissance sculptor's workshops. Bule is a member of the College Art Association, the Renaissance Society of America, the Italian Art Society and the Istituto Storico Lucchese.
