There's finally something new to 60 in Utah Valley. Utah music veteran Corey Fox has recently opened "Velour," a brand new venue in Provo. Fox is well known throughout the Utah music community, primarily for his work with the mid-90's Salt Lake band Clover, one of the most successful bands in the state's history. Throughout his 15 years on the scene, he has built a positive rapport among local bands due to his hands-on approach at performances and his dedication to helping deserving acts get the necessary exposure. Fox, band manager, club manager and concert promoter, has managed the three most successful Utah Valley venues to date: Wrapsody, Johnny B\s and Muse Music. With Velour, Fox aims to create a combination of these three venues with a twist. Unlike many Utah all-ages venues of the past, Velour will supply a high-quality setting for Utah musicians, as well as select national touring acts, to perform. It is also non-alcoholic...a much-needed nightlife preference among the local community, especially college students. Now what makes Velour so unique? It really is all about the music. Without the distraction of a bar, coffee shop or restaurant, management and patrons are at liberty to focus on the artistic value presented. And while this presents a financial risk, Fox is adamant about keeping the music quality a priority. You can check out Velour for yourself this week. Tuesday is Open Mic/Acoustic night, bands Broke w/ The Trademark and Allred are playing Friday, and Saturday will feature Palomino w/ Andrew Norsworthy and Jared Woods. All shows begin at 8 p.m. and cover charge is just $5. Velour is located at 135 N. University Ave. For more information visii www.velourlive.com K The Legend of Johnny Cash- Johnny Cash lop Ion Worst Christmas The NetXNews Staff Gone WiJd video 10 9 8 5 The NetXNews Staff Gone Wild video Braided leather •belt, white socks, and sandals. I didn't even know it existed until last January. Since then, I've seen some of the best plays I have seen anywhere. Now playing at the PTC is a brilliant adaptation of William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. Actor Brett Merritt (who plays Benedick) says, "It's a play about the humor, excitement, and difficulties of love. There's dancing, romancing, and even swimming, kind of." While the dialog remains the same, the setting has changed. Instead of being set in Elizabethan times, Clark has set his rendition of Much Ado in Sicily, Italy in 1918. "Since this is a play about men coming home from a war, 1918 seemed like a really good time period, since Italy would have been bringing its troops home from World War One. It's a very celebratory time. I've included lots of music, songs, dancing, and recreation." What makes this production of Much Ado so entertaining is the cast. One can tell that each actor has devoted vast amounts of time and practice into transforming themselves into their character, which makes them easily understandable and believable. Director Chris Clark claims, "This is probably the most positive experience I've had in directing theatre so far." He accredits much of this to his cast. "I think the show looks terrific and it's just really exciting to watch. Very easy to understand. That's what comes from having great actors." UVSC student Alexis Wardle (who plays Hero) begged me not to see this play its opening week, claiming they needed "a week to warm up and get it down." But they didn't need it. I saw Much Ado on its third night and was blown away at how wrong she was. This team of actors was so well prepared that they made the usually difficult language flow so smoothly that not only was it easily understandable, but fast-paced and natural. Provo Theatre Company is located at 105 East 100 North in Provo. Tickets are $12.50 or $15 per person depending on seating location, but believe me, there isn't a bad seat in the house considering its intimate setting. For reservations or information go to www.provotheatrecompany.com or call (801) 379-0600. I guarantee you'll have one of the best theatre experiences you've had yet. |
