Show /port/ AIO ranee MONDAY'OCTOBER 17*2005 SHARING Football female All right, here's a little game for you. Listed are three headlines; see if you can pick the one that actually happened. Ready? A) One armed golfer records eagle on a par 5 at Altamonte Springs in Florida B) 15 year-old girl throws three touchdowns in varsity game C) Lacrosse team in Seattle to compete against all robots Think you know? Really? Think about it. Technology is running our lives these days and an entire lacrosse team of machines doesn't seem to far off to me. And look what others with only one arm have done in the past. Remember Jim Abbot? He only managed throwing a no-hitter back in 93. But a female quarterback in California tossing three TD passes in a single game? C'mon, let's be real. For those of you who chose (B), congratulations; but since I know none of you did, there's no need to waste anymore of my time congratulating. Miranda McOsker is one of only 253 female football players in the state of California (most of those, I'm sure, strategically assigned as back-up place kickers). But here's where this girl's particular story gets fascinating. Just after Bishop Montgomery's 2nd string QB fractured his leg, coach Arnold Ale was chinstrokingly looking for a replacement to finish out a game against Ribet Academy. McOsker, who's the starter on the junior varsity, is also Ale's third string QB on the A-team. But I guess the girl competing in a varsity high school football game isn't an eyejolting headline in and of itself. However, going four of five with three TD passes, definitely is. For some reason, I can't help but picture my niece (who's a dancer and a straight-A biology nerd) faking the pitch and sneaking through an A-gap. I'm seeing Hillary Duff in thick pads and a helmet (two sizes too big) just picking apart an all-male defense. How about Shirley Temple chest bumping with her tight end as they both giddily jaunt off the field after a score? Yeah, that last one was just weird. For anyone that may think this is just some random act of girl power, McOsker apparently has a future. Ale said that he's not exactly sure who will be next year's starting QB, but that he definitely expects her to compete for the job. Miranda apparently also has an uncle that played the same position for Bishop Montgomery in Torrance, CA 30 years ago. Morgan Vance Sports Editor Both UVSC and Real Salt Lake had plenty of opportunities to score in back to back soccer games played at Rice Eccles Wednesday, but neither were able to capitalize in a pair of shutouts by rocky mountain foes, the University of Colorado and the Colorado Rapids. The UVSC men's team opened up against Colorado in front of between 500-1,000 fans before the MLS expansion club's final contest of the year; but it was the Buffalos that were the only team to find the net, defeating the Wolverines 20. "We had five chances to score, and didn't," said UVSC head coach/player Connor Valentine. 'They had two chances to score, and did on both." Real SL, whose had many of their own problems scoring this season, out-shot their opponent 16-7, but like the Wolverines, still couldn't manage a victory in a 1-0 loss to the Rapids. "It seems like we haven't got any breaks this year and that happened again tonight," said midfielder Clint Mathis. "It seems like tonight was a microcosm of the entire season." RSL, which beat Colorado 1 -0 during their first home game of the season back in mid-April, had the league's lowest goal total with only 30, including a scoreless streak that expanded a total 557 minutes. Tied for most of the game with Colorado, the Rapids finally pulled ahead in the 87th minute when Fabrice Noel drilled a shot right under diving goalkeeper D.J. Countess. "There is no way after the number of chances Van Vuuren on top Phillip Morgan Sports Writer Nic Van Vuuren once again earned second place in a tournament this year. The junior golfer fought his way back by shooting an even par 71 on the final day of the Boise State Bronco Invitational, jumping from eighth to second. Finishing with a total score of 213, he ended only one stroke behind leader, Graham DeLaet. of the host school. "Nic again was solid," said head coach Tommy Johnson. "That is where he is going to be every tournament; knocking at the door of victory." This was Van Vuuren's third straight second place finish this year. DeLaet shot a final round 4-over to allow the South African native to make a run at the title. As a team, the Wolverines finished up at 60-over to secure a tenth place finish. Santa Clara earned the crown, jumping from third to first on the final day to barely get by Boise State. "We have a lot of work to do as a team," said Johnson. UVSC's Andrew Smith had a nice final round, shooting a 2-over 73. The team now has over a month off before traveling to California in early November. deck that we had compared to the chance they had that we should have to talk about a result like this," said head coach John Ellinger. The Wolverines, who entered their game at 10-1-1, found themselves in a pretty even contest with the undefeated Buffalos where they possessed the ball for the majority of the game. And though they were able to limit Colorado's scoring chances, the Buffalos took advantage of the shots they had with a score just before the half. They would follow up quickly with another score early in the second. "We're not too upset about the way we played," said Valentine. "We didn't have the result we wanted, but basically just had some bad luck. Wolverines not enough for Utah State Morgan Vance Sports Editor The lady spikers rallied in game four against Utah State, but couldn't manage to force a deciding game five against Utah State in front of the largest home crowd to witness a UVSC volleyball game. Down two games to one, the Aggies had a healthy 26-20 advantage, but the Wolverines roared back to cut the deficit to only a point. Utah State however managed to seal the game and win the match (30-32, 30-26, 19-30, 2830). "It's matches like this that build character," said head coach Sam Atoa. "If the girls are willing to keep trying and stepping up, good things are going to happen for them." UVSC started hot in the first game by jumping out of the gate with a 13-7 advantage. They would keep the lead throughout most of the game before Utah State gradually managed to claw their way back,, earning their first lead 3130 arid converting on the final point to take the game. "We wanted to swing for game point, we wanted to serve for game point," said Atoa, after watching the crucial game one slip away. Utah Valley worked hard to control game two led by Camie Manwill. She had a match-high, 19 kills, including seven in game two. But the Aggies returned to earlier form, including rolling off an 8-0 run in game three, not allowing Utah Valley to come back and steal game four. They played very well in game three," con-eluded Atoa. "We were on our heels and lost the fight."
