The survey, conducted in July by Dan Jones & Associates, asked respondents their feelings about UVSC, their awareness of the school, and their feelings about the direction the school was taking. The poll was conducted over the telephone of a cross-section of the Wasatch Front. It compiled the opinions of 600 Utah residents, 189 of whom were from Utah County. The poll's margin of error was 4.5 percent. Some of the research objectives of the poll were to evaluate the aftermath of Michael Moore's controversial visit to the school last fall. Also, to rate the public's perception of UVSC and the programs offered. The poll showed that Moore's visit helped the school significantly in developing and increasing awareness. In fact, 93 percent of those surveyed said "they had heard of UVSC," this was up from 79 percent in 1993. Derek Hall, Associate Vice-President of College Marketing and Communications, said, "General awareness of the college is at an acceptable level." However, while the poll showed that Moore's visit may have helped the school's recognition, it also reflected some discontentment among some local constituents regarding the direction they feel the school is headed. In effect, 52 percent of respondents said the visit "hurt UVSC's standing in the community." The poll also asked about public awareness regarding UVSC's four-year degree programs. Though, 74 percent of Utah County residents were aware of such programs, only 49 percent of the Utah population overall, expressed awareness. This is the same percentage recorded in 2003. "We were disappointed by the awareness of four-year degrees at the College," Hall said. "We have offered Bachelor degrees since 1993, and currently have nearly 50 four-year degree programs. These results will helps us focus our marketin" efforts in the future." GEICO. The public also indicated that continuing to add four-year programs was important, as well as implementing graduate programs later down the road. "UVSC is now the third largest institution in the state, and this survey shows that our support and perceptions have increased over the past two years," Hall said. The survey, despite some results that were disappointing to the school, indicated an overall increased awareness. It also brought up important issues to be addressed as the school continues to strive for university status.
