Show opinion/ MONDAY*SEPTEMBER 26«2005 A7 The nature of homosexuality Please let go The problem with an overly-involved community Laurissa Poll Opinions Writer A couple of weeks ago UVSC's Center for the Study of Ethics hosted an ethics panel entitled "Assessing UVSC's Changing Role as an Institution of Higher Education." The proceedings of which were briefly covered in the school paper. There was a wide variety of people in attendance - Philosophy and Communication department representatives, students, the College Times Editorin-Chief... and Norm Nielsen. Since when did UVSC become a magnet for obsessive retirees from the surrounding commu, nity? We have another Kay Anderson on our hands! Adam Streeter campus - none. And if such a thing does happen there are appropriate ways of dealing with it, which leads to my second point. The purpose of an institution of higher education is to educate its students -1 repeat, the students. If there is a problem with the way students are receiving their education then they should be the ones to take action. As it is now, a large number of UVSC's students come from Utah County; in most cases this means their parents live close by. I'm glad to know that apathy doesn't completely rule America's older generations - but it is rapidly becoming the cureall for my generation. Opinions Writer So I was reading the BBC news online the other day and I came across a study that recently took place in Europe. They exposed pheromones from heterosexual men and women, and homosexual men and women to members of the same different groups. They performed brain scans on the different people while they smelled the different pheromones, but the test subjects did not know whose pheromones they were being exposed to. The brain scans showed that straight men were more attracted to the pheromones from heterosexual women, less attracted to the pheromones of lesbians, and least attracted to the men's pheromones. Homosexual men were moderately attracted to straight men's pheromones, and most attracted to the pheromones of other gay men. The same findings were true of womenstraight women were most attracted to the samples from straight men, less attracted to that of gay men, and least of all attracted to that of other women. While this may not explain the cause of these attractions, it does show that there is a biological component to sexual preference. So why do I always hear that homosexuality is a choice? I am gay, but I constantly hear people say- How are UVSC students ever going to learn to fight their own battles? What makes it worse is we don't even have to identify what our battles are Better start planning for a future turnover rate of one per semester. Really, why can't the senior citizens of Utah County Courtesy of ABC Gallery just let well At some point in our lives, we all have to leave the care and security (if they even enough alone? found in our parents home and the community that we love. exist), let alone I'm not sayfight them. I think it safe to say that if First - maybe I missed something, but when did the mere existence of Liberalism on a college campus become bad? I am a conservative, and I happen to like learning about ideas and beliefs that I don't agree with so I know what it is I don't agree with - it's called an e d u c a t i o n. Is it true that liberal professors can go too far in class by pushing their beliefs on students, rather than simply presenting them for evaluation? Absolutely. But conservative professors can go too far as well. Ethical teaching practices can be violated by professors no matter what side of the political spectrum they land on. Unless a professor, liberal or not, disrespects students' abilities to choose for themselves, we have absolutely no reason to flip out over him or her walking and breathing on our parents in oh, let's say, Orem, sent their children to a college on the east coast where a score of liberal professors proceeded to indoctrinate them, they wouldn't rush to the rescue. Why not? Because it's a part of life. We grow up and learn to be functioning members of society, a society that has both liberals and conservatives. If parents are concerned about their children departing from the lifestyles and beliefs they were raised with, they ought to discuss it .in private; it is a family issue. Leave us and our school alone; it is our school, not yours. We are adults - let us be adults. Let us be exposed to what is in our world; it will happen, whether at UVSC or elsewhere. clciz/ified/ help wonted Nannies Unlimited Great Jobs. Nation Wide - Out of] i State, I yr commitment. TJ. 830-1282 fete us online at ing that individuals like me, for one reason or another, make a conscious choice to have these types of attractions. Let me ask you straight people something. I will direct this question to the men in order to simplify it. How does the idea of sleeping with another man sound to you straight guys? Sounds pretty gross, right? So if I am just like you, what motivation would I have to go against my friends, family, and religion to practice something that I find disgusting and unpleasant? My best friend from junior high and high school no longer answered phone calls from me after I came out of the closet, and he still doesn't to this day. Many members of the community that I lived in for 13 years during my childhood won't associate with me any longer, though I see them here at UVSC all the time. Why would I risk social isolation, being disowned from my family, being discriminated against at a job (which, in the state of Utah, is not a crime, while discriminating against religion is...) if there wasn't anything in it for me? Ask yourselves these questions, and you will probably find that the idea that homosexuals are really heterosexual men who, for one reason or another, choose to date and be romantically involved with other men really doesn't make a whole lot of sense. ,ne 3-jiews.net erates, progressives, democrats, republicans, idiots? Nope. They 're just not rhinos conforming to the crowd. They've remained human like Berenger.
