The Constitution Party holds its candidates to a hign standard of character and moral conduct, because its leaders realize that a candidate can not be trusted in his public life if he can not be trusted in his personal life. The party feels it is essential for Congress to be obedient to the Constitution and accountable to the people. The party believes Congressional pensions should be eliminated. In accordance with its dedication to life and liberty, the party is opposed to any efforts to conscript citizens into the armed forces. I'm going to... mi eac°cK for a costume' U.S.U. Students get 10% off! Try it, before you buy it The party supports voluntary Reserve Officer Training Corps training in the nation's universities, college and schools. The party is also an advocate of a strong national defense, with a strong, state-of-the-art military. The party believes America should live at peace with other nations and should not interfere in their internal affairs. As the family is central to our society, the Constitution Party believes parents have the fundamental role in the nurturing and education of their chifdren. These responsibilities should not be assumed by government agencies without either due process of law or legal consent of parents. Parents should be allowed to determine the manner in which their children's education is to be provided. The Constitution Party is strongly opposed to government sponsorship and promotion of any form of gambling. The party also strongly supports the right of the people to keep and bear arms, as this is inherent in the right of individuals to defend themselves and their families. According to the party, healthcare providers should be accountable to the patients they serve. They should not be accountable to politicians and insurance bureaucrats. If the government increases its control in this area, the outcome will be higher costs and poorer results. The party also declares that all branches of government must cease their attacks on the religious liberties of the people and the states. Any form of taxation on churches and other religious organizations is clearly unconstitutional and will result in government control of those institutions. According to the party, the federal income tax is unconstitutional and should be ended. The Internal Revenue Service should be abolished. The Constitution Party promotes ways of funding the activities of the federal government that are consistent with the Constitution. This will be' possible if the federal govern^ ment is reduced to the powers and programs defined in the Constitution. This is only a short summary of the Constitution Party's platform. As can be seen,] this party has defined plans to combat the problems ourj nation faces and proves that these problems can be solved, within the bounds set by ourj Constitution. The Constitution Party provides a new choicej for America. I Colby Lyons is a senior rnajor^ ing in law and constitutional. studies. Downtown Logan (435J-752-7181 McwvSat 10AM-9PM I do think it's appropriate that religion undergoes more scrutiny during a political campaign. Austin Cline, a director for the Council for Secular Humanism, notes, "A candi- date's religion is an ideology from which a voter might draw valid, reasonable expectations about how that candidate will act or make decisions. Refusing to vote for a person based on their religious ideology need not be worse than refusing to vote for them based on their political ideology—provided, of course, that one has an accurate, fair, and reasonable understanding of that ideology" ! For me, however, Romney's religious beliefs are a secondary concern to my political objections. He's running the most craven and contrived campaign of this election season. Aside from empty platitudes and the obligatory criticism of the war's handling, he has been deafeningly silent on Iraq. Like his faith, the occupation is another issue he wants to avoid—he doesn't even list it as an issue on his campaign Web site. I'm afraid he's too busy saber-rattling against Iran and extolling the virtues of torture. And in an amusing political irony, Utah Republicans are supporting a flip floppin' Massachusetts patrician for president. Romney has conveniently tailored his opinions to the Office he's seeking—the same cardinal sin Sen. John Kerry was accused of committing. Running in Massachusetts for a Senate seat in 1994 and the governorship in 2002, Romney billed himself as a moderately liberal candidate. He vowed his judicial picks would uphold abortion rights. He claimed to be a greater advocate for gay rights than Ted Kennedy. "All people should be allowed to participate in the Boy Scouts regardless of the'\t sexual orientation," he said, and gays should serve "openly and honestly in our nation's military." i He pledged to fight abstiJ nence-only sex education.l He took measures to combatl global warming. And he supJ g portedd tough gun control laws,! like the Brady Bill. I But now, having to woo the: radical right, Romney ,is cast-] ing himself as the conservative, candidate. He will appoint jusH tices bent on overturning Rod v. Wade. He opposes both civil unions and same-sex marriage, even favoring a constitutional amendment to ban the latter. He no longer sweats global warming, dismissing it as a "radical" idea. And he is seeking the endorsement of a skeptical National Rifle Association, of which he's only been a member for a year. In a pathetic effort to assuage the; concerns of gun rights activists,; he told them he was an avid and lifelong hunter. Turns out,! as Romney was later forced to admit, he has only hunted; twice in his life—shooting rabH bits and quail as a kid—and doesn't even own a gun. What kind of man can't even be honest about his hobbies? j With his integrity, I half expect "multiple-choice Mitt" to change religions as well. Jon Adams is a junior majoring in political science.
