PATRICK ODEN photo illustration USU offers programs for students to stay fit By K1MBERLYHINCKLEY staff writer When students are juggling work, school and play, it may be difficult for them to find time to take care of themselves physically. However, according to the USU Campus Recreation Web site, Campus Recreation offers intramural sports, the Outdoor Recreation Center, club sports, the Fun, Fit, Forever program, the Health, Physical Education and Recreation building and the Fieldhouse. Shelly Bybee, Fieldhouse manager and Fun, Fit, Forever program coordinator, said there are benefits to students who exercise. "It makes students happier and gives them motivation to be a better student," she said. Bybee also said exercise helps reduce stress level tremendously. Adam Clark, undeclared freshman, said exercise helps him think clearly especially when he is frustrated. Medterms.com said this is because exercise releases endorphins, which are moodelevating chemicals. Jessica Pedersen, freshman majoring in computer science, said exercise has a particular benefit for her because it helps control her diabetes. "(Exercise) helps keeps blood sugar in control and helps my mood," Pedersen said. Pederson and Clark both said when they don't exercise they feel less motivated to do school work. Clark said that it also improves his work ethic. Bybee said simple things that can be done to help with fitness are participating in campus programs and walking instead of taking the bus. Clark said on days he can't get to the Fieldhouse, he does push-ups and sit-ups before class. Bybee said students should be exercising three to five times a week at least and that regular exercise helps get into a routine that can be helpful later in life. There are ways to help motivate students to exercise. Bybee said. "Around peers is a good atmosphere," she said. Pedersen said she invites people to run on a treadmill with her at the same time. Campus Recreation offers many ways to be fit on campus. Bybee said the Fun, Fit, Forever program is a free fitness program to all current students. Fun, Fit, Forever offers classes to all students with a valid student ID card. These classes include hip hop, jazzercise, step and kick boxing aerobics, yoga and water aerobics. A schedule is available on the Campus Recreation Web site, www.usu. edu/camprec/. Campus Recreation also hosts the ORC, which has day and weekend trips and offers equipment rental. Other ways to get exercise on campus are at the Fieldhouse, which offers a rock climbing room, treadmills, an indoor track and other fitness equipment. ~kimbcrlyM.h(g)(tggieinail. usu.edu Body fat: HPER has hydrostatic tank Mon-Thur 5-11 FH5-12 Sat 2-12 2850 N 50 E North Logan (North of Eccles Ice Arena) Call 755-7872 for more info. [] continued from page 5 "It's best to test your progress percentage-wise, but it's not really practical unless you are a student at USU. Then it's fairly practical," Blaneysaid. The HPER has a tank for hydrostatic weighing, and it's used by practicum students completing their masters in corporate wellness and other physical education courses. All USU students can use the tank, but since it costs money to fill the tank, Blaney said it is best to have a group come in at the same time. "We try to do it once each semester for anybody that wants to do it for $7," Blaney said. "If people want to do it other than the scheduled time, it is $25 unless they can get a group of 10 or more Basically it needs to be worth our time. But if a group wants to do it, we'll work with them." "Its a really good opportunity for students," said Dayna Barrett, graduate assistant of the employee wellness center. "Generally if somebody were to go do this somewhere else, they would charge them 50 bucks to do it one time." "1 hate to use the word 'gold standard,'" Wagner said. "A lot of people say underwater weighing is the gold standard. In body composition, there's no such thing as a 'gold standard.' But for the methods that we have, it's near the top. It's one of the better ways to estimate body fat. If everything is done correctly, then it will give you a pretty accurate estimate." Blaney said participants are encouraged to wear only a swimsuit during testing because the weight of layers of clothing or coverups may skew the results. Towels are provided by the HPER. Participants are given a printout at the end of their composition test on what is normal and what one should be looking at. If there are a lot of requests toward the end of fall semester, Barrett said they may offer another day open for students to sign up for $7. Students may contact Blaney at phil.blaney@usu.edu for more information.
