Show Monday,'April112007^ The Utah Statesman Opinion LETTERS From page 12 motto located on the Student Services website reads "Let us do all we can to help the student be successful." They go on to say that they place a high value on helping their students and that if they can do so in any way to email them. Obviously they understand their responsibilities, and communicate a desire to fulfill them. This is where the action ends. A beautifully worded goal is completely useless without the proper steps that lead to its success. There should be managers monitoring phone calls and making sure questions are being answered. Regular meetings should be held to refresh staff's memory of their goal. I hope that the Utah State University staff will read this letter and consider its message. Next time a student calls or contacts them with a question, I challenge them to solve the problem. Do not pass them off to the next person in line. Be considerate, be helpful, but most of all... do the job that they are getting paid for. To voice your opinion on the subject contact Gary Chambers, in charge of USU's student services at: gary.chambers@usu. edu Dayna Griffiths Love the sinner, hate the sin To the editor: Jesus taught us that we should love the sinner and condemn the sin. With this in mind, I would like to discuss Mr. Blackham's column on Wednesday. While I fully agree that homosexuals are deserving of just as much love and respect that one would accord any other human being (one of my friends in high school was openly gay), I must disagree with much of his column. First, the issue of choice vs. born is irrelevant. As Ether 12:27 says "I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me...for if they humble themselves before me, then will I make weak things strong unto them". Homosexuality, as pointed out by the leaders of the LDS churcn, is simply a weakness that can and should be overcome. There was an article in the New York Times a few months ago discussing the success of many groups that offer help in this area. Having a weakness is no excuse for succumbing to it. Homosexuality is a sin- Mr. Blackham fails to understand the importance of revelation, and the transition between the Mosaic, or lower law, and the higher law as revealed by Christ. Shrimp (and all else that was "unclean") was allowed to be eaten when revelation was given to Peter (Acts 10), and child disobedience is still a sin (Ephesians 6). If we were to follow Mr. Blackham's logic, one would conclude that other forbidden sexual perversions, such as bestiality and incest, which are also prohibited in Leviticus, are moral, since they are not explicitly condemned in the New Testament. This view has been continually supported by LDS church leaders, along with the belief that marriage is ordained of God and is supposed to be between a man and a woman - see The Proclamation on the Family, fortable- I have no problem being around someone who is homosexual. However, the light of Christ will testify of sin, and seeing homosexual acts of affection, because of their sinful nature, should make righteous people uncomfortable. Peter Griffin Imus' words protected speech $12 per couple Ikhcls (an be purchased ot the ISC card office, or for % at the door To the editor: The Statesman has blissfully ignored Don Imus' racist/sexist comments regarding the Rutgers women basketball team, but the cable news channels are running it into the ground. Supposedly, this has even become an issue for the 2008 Presidential election with Hilary Clinton, Barack Obama, and Rudy Giuliani all opining. Will political correctness jut die already? Don Imus did not slander or advocate violence against these women. He insulted them, identifying their race and gender as domains in which they are vulnerable. (Their hurt and angry reaction legitimizes the notion that being a black woman is something to be touchy about). Censoring an insult, even only through threat of boycott, is an unwarranted and dangerous regulation of the marketplace of ideas. Roast racism off the airwaves and you soon roast off impoliteness and then legitimate challenges to conventional ways of thinking. Ifs anti-intellectualism and antiAmericanism at its most repugnant. So I followed her around all day, every day, until I forgot that my life had ever consisted of anything more than following around a tiny little chubby person: She was in that awkward phase: too old to just lay there like a slug, but too young to realize that the ability to walk does not bring invincibility. Fortunately, at seven years old, her brother had reached the point where he could be trusted not to ingest pointy, poisonous objects, so he spent most of the weekend wandering the streets with a gang of neighborhood boys with names like Jaxton or Kaeydun or Rygar or something. Meanwhile, Lily decided she wanted to wander around outside, where she discovered the sandbox, which she thoroughly enjoyed. Unfortunately, part of that enjoyment involved putting a lot of the sand in her diaper, and I didn't stop her because I was too busy gazing longingly at the distant cars on the freeway and trying to remember if I had ever been so free. By the time my brother and sister-in-law returned, I had gained an amazed and befud- dled respect for anyone who stays home and takes care of small children. I love my niece and nephew, but two and a half days of being a fulltime caretaker made me unspeakably grateful I don't have kids right now. We live in a culture where it seems marriage and children are as much a part of the college experience as textbooks and dorm rooms. While that lifestyle works for some,! think most college students would be better off using their college years to survive on their own and establish themselves. If you really want to get married and have kids at 19, make sure ifs really what you want, and not something you're doing to fulfill the expectations of any other person, church or cultural norm. Life is not a race; we can move at the pace that suits us best. Enjoy whatever stage of life you are in. After all, once those kids come along, the knives have got to go back in the drawer and you'd better watch your mouth. Devin Felix is a senior in print journalism.
