Show The Blue and the White ^SPORTS DEBATE • David Baker Sam Bryner cc uiu.edu WHITE VIEW BLUE VIEW 1. Are Pacman Jones' and Chris Henry's suspension justified? Good. It's about time. If you are interviewed by the police 10 times, you deserve to take a year off. In the real world, they both would have been fired from their jobs. I think if I was making millions of dollars to play football, I could find ways to stay out of trouble - like swimming all day in a pool full of fine champagne or making paper airplanes out of $100 bills and throwing them at hobos. I applaud Roger Goodell for doing what should have been done a long time ago. Since Pacman Jones was drafted by the Titans, he has been involved in nine different "instances" - everything from three arrests to a parole violation. Do I need to say anything else? As for Henry, hi: suspension sent a message out to all NFI players that if you mess around at all, yot! will be accountable for* it. 2. Who is going to rule college football next year? It's spring scrimmage time, which means it's about time we pick some national championship contenders. The crystal ball isn't too clear yet, but I think Florida has a great chance to return to the BCS National Title fiasco. Urban Meyer is still there and Tim Tebow is still a stud. Now all they need is a defense. I think Arkansas will be good again. Darren McFadden is a good pre-preseason Heisman pick, and he'll be back. And you can always count on USC to be good. Michigan should be good, too. But I; think someone from the SEC will take it. /kt . have a couple of things to wiatch for next year in college football. First, USU will improve on its record from last year. Looking at their schedule, theyjhave at least three games they could win. Also, Florida will not repeat as national champions. The year is already starting out bad for them witn lineman Ronnie Wilson getting arrested. Sorry BYU, I guess that counts you guys out as well since you had two players arrested. 3. In the NBA, who is the best team in each conference? I want to gloat for a second. I picked the Miami Heat to make a second-half run. I stayed with them after D-Wade got hurt. What did they do? They went on a run, clinched their division, earned a playoff spot and have made it into the number four slot in the East. Ha ha ha. They're my team in the East. D-Wade and Shaq, need I say more? All the teams in the West are good . - even the Warriors - but Dallas is the class of the conference. They score. They defend. Dirk is an MVP candidate. And Mark Cuban is insane. You gotta love it. It pains me deeply to not be able to pick the Jazz out of the West. The Phoenix Suns are the best team out of the West because of Steve Nash. Out of the East, I have to pick the Detroit Pistons. They might not be the hottest team right now, but they have four guys in the starting lineup who have played together for years and who can all score when needed. 4. Did Tiger blow it at the Masters? Think you've got what it takes to be Editor in Chief of The Utah Statesman? Apply before Thursday, April 12, 4p.m. Check with the adviser, TSC 105, for details. Maybe all the dominos will fall for you. No, the Masters blew, but Tiger Woods wasn't the one supplying the air. The course and the cold pretty much beat the hell out of the field. Zach Johnson won with a + 1 , which is tied for the lowest winning score in tournament history. Tiger didn't play well, but he didn't play terribly either. Trie course just played him. But at least he didn't play as bad as Phil Mickelson. Even I could get a triple bogey, Phil. Yes, it was a tough course but isn't Tiger Woods supposed to be an arm and a Teg better than everyone else? Even on a tough course that left everyone v/ith high scores, shouldn't his score be the lowest of the high scores? The fact is that Tiger choked. He choked on holes 17 and 18 on Friday and Saturday and again on Sunday when he tried to drive the green in two and ended up going fishing. Plain and simple - Tiger choked, and don't look for him to do that again soon. 5. Weekly rant 1 have a problem, and I'm going to use my rant to snare it with the world - or at least the five of you who read this. I can't leave the NFL alone. If the NFL was one of my exgirlfriends, it would need to get a restraining order against me, because I'm -constantly trying to look through its blinds and catch it in a sensitive moment. Basically, 1 can't stop j watching NFL Live and the NFL Network, ] even though the season doesn't start for.:1 almost six months. I need help getting inter- ,1 ested in baseball, basketball, hockey, UEFA \ ; Cup soccer or anything. Help. Roger Goodell just put his reputation through the roof. He is probably not wellknown by most sports fans ana now after his first big PR move, he will be made out to be a superhero. His attempt at cleaning up the NFL will only sour their ratings higher. • CROSSING THE FINISH LINE From page 8 Pick 5 for $5.95 Anytime she runs with push her and inspire her to do better. "It's really motivational because if one meet you have a bad race and things don't go well for you, but you see one of your teammates run through and do well, it gives you motivation because you know that the next meet that could be you. Because you train right there alongside them in practice and you know that it is just a matter of time until you get up alongside them, they also set a standard," Egan said. Egan said she loves seeing her teammates do well and she is all about helping the team and supporting everyone else. "There is a really, really good feel on our team. If someone passes me in a race that's on my team, then that is good because that means that the team is flowing," Egan said. Once she graduates, she said she wants to move to Oregon and become a high school English teacher and track coach. Aside from coaching, she does not plan on running competitively after school but does plan on running in marathons for fun. "I am going to be one of those old wrinkly ladies running marathons," Egan said. If there was one thing Egan has learned from running and her experience, she said it is to never quit in whatever it is she's doing. '• "There are times in my life that I wanted to quit and I am so glad that I didn't. So many people probably • thought I should have quit as well because I was that far away from my goals and my dreams, but because I didn't quit, it all paid off and I know that if people don't ; quit it will be worth it too," Egan said. •sa771abry@cc.usu.edu Obsessed with sports?
