Show "Language is the source of misunderstandings." Antoine de Saint-Exupery 1/ Monday, April 9,2007 797-1762 statesman@cc.usu.edu www.utahstatesman.com Communication is key - even in boxing Utah Statesman Staff Last Friday we were sorry to report that the Sigma Chi's Fight Night was canceled. This was unfortunate, because our mama said we were supposed to knock you out. In truth the shame is that the money that Sigma Chi had raised for cancer research had to be refunded. The event was an example of USU students working jr ... together to not only raise funds Our View Editor in Chief Elizabeth Lawyer News Editor Di Lewis Assistant News Editor Arie Kirk ^°r a s°°d cause ' Dut °ffer ° tner students an event they don't nor^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ mally get to see. However, due to USU administration not getting all the forms they needed, the event was not to be. Now, we're not going to accuse USU administration of being pro-cancer. That would be stupid. We are, however, going to accuse them of getting a bit bureaucratic sometimes. It seems like no matter what students want to do, whether it's hold an event, graduate or even post something on the notice board, there are two, three or more layers of administration they have to go through. Honestly, while many people were disappointed to hear what happened to Fight Night, was anyone really surprised? So what should be done to keep good events from being canceled? Everyone is going to nave to pitch in. First, everyone should pay attention to what's going on. Talk about it with your friends. Create a buzz. Now, everyone - students and faculty - who has any sort of control over events needs to keep an ear open for this buzz. If you hear something about an event that needs permission, clearance or other assistance from you, get in touch with the organizers as soon as you can. Before it's too late to get everything arranged would be nice. Finally, event organizers, you need to make sure you have crossed all your 't's and dotted all your 'i's. Double check that you've got everything squared away. Better yet, triple check. Check with different people in the same department, just in case someone else knows something that your contact doesn't. Let's not let any more good events go unheld. ISLAMIC CIVIL WJ?. After all, the Bush administration's lack of interest in war-related details is legendary. Before the war began, the administration manifested this by ignoring intelligence that undermined its case for war. In his 2003 State of the Union address, for instance, Bush told the nation that, "The British government has learned that Saddamssein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa." Those infamous 16 words were justified by the existence of documents purporting to show a uranium deal between Iraq and Niger. Not, we presume, wishing to micromanage the decision-making process, Bush and his top advisers ignored evidence that the documents were fake - even though, as the Washington Post concluded last week, the documents were "filled with errors easily identifiable through a simple Internet search." And then there was the prewar "planning," a similar triumph of nonmicromanagement on the part of the administration. Someone has to manage Iraq Copy Editor are not newsworthy. But news coverage should also include evidence of progress. Whether Americans choose to support or oppose our efforts in Iraq, 1 hope they could make their decision based on as complete a picture of the situation in Iraq as is possible to report. A few examples: -Sunni sheikhs in Anbar are now fighting al-Qaida. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki visited Anbar's capital, Ramadi, to meet with Sunni tribal leaders. The newly proposed deBaathification legislation grew out of that meeting. Police recruitment in Ramadi has increased dramatically over the past four months. - More than 50 joint U.S.Iraqi stations have been established in Baghdad. Regular patrols establish connections with the surrounding neighborhood, resulting in a significant increase in security and actionable intelligence. - Extremist Shiite militia leader Moqtada al-Sadr is in hiding, his followers are not contesting American forces, sectarian violence has dropped in Baghdad and we are working with the Shiite mayor of Sadr City. - Iraqi army and police forces are increasingly fighting on their own and with American forces, and their size and capability are growing. Iraqi army and police casualties have increased because they are fighting more. Despite these welcome developments, we should have no illusions.
