The contest was held as part of an MHR 3110 Managing Organizations and People class project, in which the class is divided into several groups to hold fundraisers or do work projects to raise money for the micro-loan accounts, which will provide small loans to entrepreneurs in Peru and Chile to help them start their businesses. Reed Merrick, a senior majoring in horticulture and the CEO of The Elite Eight, the group that organized the paper airplane-throwing contest, said the idea came to him in the shower. He said once they knew what they would do to raise money, the group had to hurry to put on the event before spring football practice began in Romney Stadium, where the contest was held. The group organized the event in just two weeks. "I had a great group that just kind of grabbed onto the idea and got everything organized quickly," Merrick said. Many of the contestants employed the same kind of haste in folding their paper airplanes, including first-place winner Brad Isom, a sophomore majoring in biochemistry, who won $200 for getting his plane closest to the target in the second round. "I just got my instructions off the Internet right before I came here. I threw it out there and it went in the bull's-eye," Isom said. "I'm definitely surprised." Isom said he hadn't thought yet about what he would do with the prize money but said he would probably just put it in the bank and pay bills. • PLANES see page 3 Jamie Crane/jamiecrQne@(cu$u.edu GNDIDATE STACI MEACHAM hugs a friend after learning she made it into the final race for ASUSU president. Her opponent is Peter McChesney. Final ASUSU races are on BY D I LEWIS News Editor ASUSU primaries are over and the race is on. Two candidates remain for each of the positions. Either Staci Meacham or Peter McChesney will be next ASUSU president after beating six other candidates in a close primary race. Meacham trailed McChesney by 36 votes. Meacham said if she wins the presidency, she wants to make students more^aware of what they can accomplish through ASUSU. "We're the most powerful student government in Utah because we have such a good relationship with the administration. People don't realize the level of power they have," Meacham said. She said she also wants more classes with Supplemental Instruction in upper division undergraduate courses such as Organic Chemistry. McChesney said he wants to focus on student finances and improving academics. "I want to do things to combine the power of ASUSU with the stuff that's already out there - to get better scholarships and more work study," McChesney said. Executive vice president candidate Jacob Roskelley said the role of the executive VP is lobbying. "I want to create good relationships with the current elected officials. I want to get students to vote, register to vote and understand why it's important to vote. Funding for transportation and public education is going up, but higher education isn't as much," Roskelley said. He said if students show elected officials they hold voting power, it can increase funding for higher education. Roskelley's opponent Nate Neagle was not at the event. -dilewis@cc.usu.edu Need to Know • Staci Meacham and Peter McChesney are running for ASUSU President • Nate Neagle and Jacob Roskelley are running for Executive VP. • Bryan Olsen and Christopher Barney are running for Student Advocate VP. • Sonny Bryant and MJ Iran are running for Campus Diversity and Organizations VP • Jake Cook and Tyler Neal are running for Programming VP. • German Ellsworth and Tessa Taylor are running for Service VP. • Julie Ung and Lisa Rose are running for Agriculture Senator. • Joseph Ure and Edward Norton are running for Business Senator • Christi Olcott and Jacob Wilkey are running for Education Senator. • Spencer Tell Naser and Paul Wilson are running for Engineering Senator. • Ben Pollock and Nick West are running for HASS Senator.
