Show AGGIE FRIDAY, APRIL 1 2 0 0 5 7 LIFE Check out the Utah Statesman online at www.utahstatesman.com Got nuts: They could help you loose weight BY DESONTA HOLDER KRT Go ahead and get a little nutty. That's what Dr. Leonard J. Ram of Stuart, Fla., wants you to do. As founder of The Ram Nut Diet, created over the past three years, he tried it out on himself and lost 30 pounds over a year. He has kept the weight off for two years and he's still sticking with the program. It's not about counting calories, eating special meals or riding the StairMaster to exhaustion. It's about nuts - almonds, cashews, pistachios, etc. Before you balk at the fat and calorie content, consider that most of the fat in nuts is unsaturated, meaning it can lower your LDL cholesterol. Nuts are also high in fiber and protein, and they're a good source of vitamins and minerals. "Nuts were taboo 10 or 15 years ago;' Ram says. But they're "not only healthy, but extremely satisfying." The Ram Nut Diet focuses on eating raw or roasted nuts to control hunger. For optimum benefits, Ram suggests you exercise and hire a nutritionist or dietitian to help turn this diet into a lifestyle. The program is outlined in his book "The Ram Nut Diet," and it's taught at his eight weight-loss centers across the state, with one in Miami, Weston and Boca Raton. At the weight-loss centers, a 12-week program starts at about $60 a week • for an individual and includes sessions with a nutritional consultant. Just knowing you have to check in with a counselor will help keep you on track. Claudia Gonzalez, a dietitian at Ram Nutrition and Weight Loss in Miami, says snacking on an ounce of nuts between well-balanced meals will make you feel fuller, causing you to eat less. "You'll have a nutritious, satisfying snack so you won't need to eat extra," Gonzalez says. If you were to snack on junk food instead, "the empty calories won't satisfy you" and you could end up overeating. With a weight-loss coach, dieters "learn not only how to eat well, but MEXICO how to deal with food issues," Gonzalez says. "They learn about the basies of nutrition. ... They become aware of how to maintain their weight. "The clients eat real food, no special bars or shakes. It's a lifestyle. You can apply the tools to your daily life." Some of Ram's diet guidelines include: •Eat slowly and only when you are hungry. •Stop eating when you are full. •Avoid nuts that have added oil. •Avoid foods that contain sugar. •Exercise three to five times a week. "A lot of dieters feel like they're starving themselves," Ram says. "We convince people this program can be continued indefinitely because they're not hungry and nuts are tasty food. It's a very satisfying program." Spanish Club members who went to Sonora include: Ron Godfrey, Tim Cannon, Dave Cox, Aaron Parker, Patrick Jolley, Jordan Singleton, Casey Reynolds, BrandyTrygstad, Jacque Parker, Channing Hamilton, Cassie Carven, Jennifer Huish, Christina Guymon, Angela Squires and myself. Besides working on the house, the group also visited the FAI after school program, the local university and the beach in San Carlos. The project truly made a difference, especially in the lives of the children who will be living in the new house. Several club members commented that their favorite part of the trip was at the end of the day when the kids would come home from school and help work ... or convince us to take a break and play some volleyball. The moment that had the most profound effect on me was on our last day or working when Josefina, the mother, celebrated her 50th birthday. I will never forget her face while we sat singing happy birthday to her. She blinked hard and avoiaed eye contact as she attempted to swallow her emotions. And suddenly it hit me: a feeling that 1 cannot recapture. It was something like an overwhelming understanding of the blessings in my life and the reality of the lives of Josefina and her children. I am shrouded with gifts and a table full of people singing to me on every one of my birthdays. I am given clothing, entertainment and little novelty items that could pay for an entire meal in Mexico. A gift to me will never be a decent home. I cannot even grasp something so simple and necessary being absent from my life. It is interesting and sad to me that such a big feeling can be washed out in only a week's time. We arrived home on the night of Monday after Spring Break. School had already started again, and I had two big tests before the weekend. I was forced back into fourth gear with no time to ever just sit and think about things. I now realize that experiences like that can only be truly savored for a moment, but they do change you in small ways that last throughout your life. Problems of conflict and honesty soon surface when Simon meets his future fatherin-law Percy (played by Mac), who isn't shy about expressing his suspicions. The entire film showcases Kutcher's comedic skills as an uncomfortable newcomer trying to make the best of things. This is contrasted against Mac, who never lets down as the staunch and haughty patriarch trying to protect his daughter. As the relationship between Kutcher and Mac matures, we watch a variety of scenes where they try to make us laugh by using racial slurs and sexual innuendos. Aside from a little physical zaniness, the bulk of humor in this film comes from these sources. Even though the PAY MORE punch lines are plentiful and well-delivered, they can easily create awkward tension or uproarious laughter from the audience. And the line which divides these two responses is very thin indeed. Consequently, this romantic/family comedy is best suited for people who enjoy urban humor and jokes that border on the offensive. This does not mean that the film wasn't a good one. AH of the actors pulled their own weight and it is easy to see that they each have fun with their roles. What adds more to the film is that it isn't entirely a comedy. The director and screenwriters effectively incorporate scenes of relationship drama and racism which help to anchor the moments of laughter. "Guess Who," as a whole, does have a notable amount of truth and realism, overlaid with humor that the audience might view as distasteful. Another element that supports the film's credibility is the social commentary it provides about how most of us view interracial relationships today. Much different from the 1960s, they are not something to be afraid of or ashamed of but can be treated with respect and lightheartedness like any other relationship. By providing this commentary, and combining it with risque humor that is only somewhat predictable, "Guess Who" will give happiness and heart to its viewers.
