Show Tuesday, April 1, 2014 DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE 7 SERCER Utes unenthused about upcoming season Mustache Man Ass BALL HANDLER Last season, the Utah women's soccer team had one of its most successful seasons in program history. In just their third year in the Pac-12, the Utes were able to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. After returning key pieces, Utah should be primed to compete for the Pac-r2 title this year, if not more. Despite the success displayed in 2013, head coach Ronald Messerton thinks the Pac-12 might be a little too competitive for his team. "Winning the conference title seems to be a pipe dream for us," Messerton said. "Last year, I thought we could compete, but after failing for another year, I think it's time we call it quits." Regardless of Messerton's feelings, in the three years they've been a part of the Pac-12, the Utes have shown they can be competitive. The team, however, will have to find a new leader, as last year's team captain, Amy Warner, has graduated and moved on. Some prime candidates for the position are Aster Halloway and Bryony Nirts. When talking to Halloway about the chances of her leading the team, though, she seemed less than excited. "I don't want to be a leader," Halloway said. "If something goes wrong, all the blame will be put on me, and I ain't about that life." Adding to the woes of a finding a new leader, the team has to break in and welcome five freshmen to the team, a task easier said than done. It's a saying Utah athletic director Kris Heel has been using over the past couple of weeks. With some sports unable to beat Pac-12 competition, his solution is to add another way to compete. On Tuesday, Heel announced Utah will be adding men's volleyball in the spring of 2015. Heel also announced he has already found the "right man for the job" in current men's basketball coach Larry Krystkowiak. "Larry has always wanted to be a volleyball coach," Heel said. "He stuck to basketball because it was more of a 'manly' thing for him to do. During his NBA days, it was not uncommon that he took off during the offseason to play in European leagues. We feel that his track record proves he is more than qualified to get the new program running as if it was not new."
