A mere four-hour drive away, Moab is known for its world-famous slickrock and is the ultimate destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Slickrock biking, off-road jeeping and hiking are some of the adventures that are easily accessible and relatively inexpensive or free all-together. Moab also boasts river rafting, canoeing and kayaking, cliff-jumping, sky diving, an open slackline park, disc golf and many more outdoor undertakings. Nearby destinations of Arches National Park, Dead Horse Point, and Canyonlands ensure quality hiking and new routes and sights to see every day. When you are finished with hiking, take a scenic drive on one of the Top 10-rated drives in the country, River Road. With the Colorado River on your right and looming canyon cliffs on your left, the views and thrill of River Road can't be beat. Endless side canyons and trails are located off river road. Check out Negro Bill's Canyon and the infamous Medieval Chamber repel off Morning Glory Arch, or hike to the iconic Fishers Towers. Located just off of River Road is the beautiful Red Cliffs Lodge. Home to the John Wayne memorabilia and movie museum, Red Cliffs has plenty to do in its spacious venue. The lodge also hosts daily barbecues, equestrian riding and archery — a definite must-see. Whatever type of outdoor activity you like, Moab has something for you.The epic natural environment will keep you active throughout the day and its epic night life will keep the party going. —Lynette Randall HOMESTEAD CRATER Want to go somewhere warm without driving more than an hour? The Homestead Crater is for you. Throw on your swim suit and enjoy warm waters and the sun above. The Crater has been forming for over 10,000 years. Two miles below the surface, the Earth's interior heats the water and leaves the Crater at a warm 90-96 degrees Fahrenheit. The Crater is located in a dome that lets in sunshine and fresh air, allowing for an outdoor experience without the cold winter environment. Float in the water or lounge nearby with a book and relax. The crystal clear mineral water makes for great swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving. Therapeutic soaks and paddle boarding yoga classes are available as well. The Crater is frequented yearround, but hits its peak time in the winter. There are other activities outside the water as well. Self-guided Crater tours allow you to study the history, geology, and archaeology of this famous spot. With many lodge, hotel and even camping accommodations, the Homestead Crater is a great option for a getaway. Nearby Heber offers many events such as the Heber railroad, Cascade Springs, and multiple museums. Lounging in warm waters without leaving the comfort of home certainly sounds pretty good to me. —Lynette Randall GOBLIN VALLEY Hidden within Southern Utah and surrounded by national parks and monuments is Goblin Valley State Park, one of Utah's natural treasures that is missed by many people. Recently, Goblin Valley has received some unwanted press because of an scout leader who pushed these mysterious structures to the ground, just in case you missed it on the news. Goblin Valley is one of my favorite destinations for a good Spring Break getaway. Not only is it a short drive — less than four hours — it has many different activities. If you're into exhilarating hikes with a splash of climbing and small spaces, hit up one of the slot canyons. Not only are they filled with beautiful natural patterns from all the runoff, they also have some pretty cool waterfalls. I wouldn't suggest some of the hikes if you get claustrophobic, however. If you are more into sitting around the campsite and riding your badass dirt bike, there are tons of areas specifically designed for you. Even if you just like to meander around aimlessly, you can drive up to the Goblin Valley parking lot and walk through the giant structures that loom over you, looking as if they will tumble with the lightest touch. You also get to be on location of the 1998 blockbuster movie "Galaxy Quest" No matter what kind of mood you're in, you can find a new getaway at Goblin Valley State Park. Make sure to pack your marshmallows and graham crackers to have a toasty time. —Brent Uberty 10 wasatcl• magazine |
