Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE Monday, January 7, 201 3 9 Fans can help tip scale in Utah's favor T he Utes have four road losses. They missed four shots to beat ASU in the final seconds of overtime last week. Four more points for Utah would've toppled undefeated Arizona. Four missed free throws cost Utah a win at BYU. Four points in four different games is all that stands between Utah's 8-6 record and what could've easily been a 12-2 record. Starting to see a pattern? Four seems to be the number that haunts this new Utah team, but there's great news. Four is also the magic number that can help them. For the first time in history, students can get four free guest tickets to any Utah basketball home game. Weird. StaffWriter Call it a coincidence, call it superstition, but I hear a calling from the sports universe. "Bring four friends, family members or even complete strangers to the Huntsman Center," the sports universe says. The Huntsman Center has room for 15,000 fans. So far this season, the most it has held for a basketball game was 7,896. Home court advantage plays a ridiculously vital role in basketball. It's a game of momentum, and the athletes feed off the energy of the crowd. BYU brought 16,109 fans in to help boost them over Utah by only three points earlier in December. Arizona had 14,545 people screaming and hoping the Wildcats would remain undefeated Saturday versus the Utes. Arizona held on by a thread to beat Utah by only three again. The Runnin' Utes have started to rebuild from the ground up after a dismal six-win season last year. They were picked to finish in a distant last place in the Pac-12 before this season got underway. However, their first two games of conference play seem to point oth- erwise. This team is talented. This year's Utes have already outdone last year's with eight wins. They have six losses, four of which were by three or fewer points. That's one basket. A concerted whisper from a capacity Utah crowd could push one more threepointer through the hoop, collective wishful thinking could help the ball bounce the right way, or 15,000 screaming fans could scare an opponent out of the building. After a disappointing football season, this school should be looking elsewhere for something to get excited about. Well, here it is. The Runnin' Utes have been in a position to claim victory in 13 of the 14 games they've played so far. This should be a call to action Utah fans. With more fans in the stands, the haunting number four can be turned into a magic number. UCLA comes to the Huntsman Center on Thursday. If fans show up, Utah can make a mark on the Pac-12 and create an atmosphere that opponents fear. The Utes are talented enough to compete against everyone in the conference, but a little help from students and their four guests can take them to the next level. It's fun, it's free and a perfect excuse for students to go out for the night.
