SPORTS EDITOR That was close. In what would have undoubtedly been the biggest win in Larry Krystkowiak's tenure, the Runnin' Utes fell just short to No. 3 Arizona on Saturday, losing 60-57. A 3-point attempt from guard Jarred DuBois as time expired would have sent the game into overtime, but instead it clanged hard off the rim twice before bouncing out. It was DuBois' second attempt from downtown in the final seconds, as he had missed one with II ticks remaining, which would have given Utah a two-point lead. "I almost knew the last one was in 'cause I always have confidence in J.D., but it just didn't go our way," said freshman Jordan Loveridge on the ESPN 700 postgame show. Loveridge finished with 17 points. The loss dropped the Utes to 0-2 in WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Pac-12 play, but the two defeats have come by a combined four points, the first being a 55-54 loss last Wednesday at Arizona State. "We came into two [tough] environments here," said Utah head coach Larry Krystkowiak on the postgame show "It's not an easy trip to start with. Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. Boulder, Colo. Kruger departs for NFL Draft Michael Smith STAFF WRITER The frustration was visible on Utah head coach, Anthony Levrets' face as the buzzer sounded to end the game. On a day when Utah was always one step behind the fourth-ranked Stanford Cardinal, the Utes lost 7o-56 on Sunday and continued their recent slide with a third straight loss. In its second conference game of the season, Utah kept the Stanford lead under double digits for the majority of the afternoon. However, Utah's only lead of the game was 2-0 in the first minute of play and it played catchup the whole game, but ultimately couldn't even the score or pull away. "I'm really proud of my team's effort," Levrets said. "The final score was not indicative of the kind of battle that we had today." Every time Stanford looked to pull away, Utah would respond with a bucket. That trend continued until late in the second half when the Cardinal was able to end the game on a 14-6 run. With 13 minutes to play and the Utes down 56-5o after a threepointer by Michelle Plouffe, Utah was stymied and only scored six more points the rest of the game. The loss drops Utah to 9-4 on the season and 0-2 in Pac-12 play.
