It turns out her mom had been in the hospital that whole week after giving birth to a premature baby. Like something out of a movie, of course this player was the one who hit the game-winning shot. I knew that was what the story should focus on, so I wrote it accordingly, submitted it and went on my merry way. The following Thursday I had the chance to cover another Bingham girls basketball game. At halftime, a man approached me and said he was the father of the preemie and the player. He reported that mom and baby are doing well and thanked me for writing the story. He said it brought happiness to his family during a difficult time. It's always nice to get a corn- Horoscopes pliment about a story I write, but that's not what I'll remember about this experience. It's always nice to be able to write something positive in the midst of all the negative and mundane things that happen, but that's not really what I'll remember either. What I'll remember is the fact that I got to be involved in a neat experience by virtue of the fact that I happened to have the right job on the right day. I'm sure there will be days in the future when I don't feel this way about my line of work, but when that happens, I'm glad I'll be able to reflect on the experience I had writing about the preemie and the player. r.mcdonald@ chronicle.utah.edu Twitter: @ryanwmcdonald Full horoscopes available online: wwwdailyutahchronicle/horoscopes Today's birthday: This year you focus on your goals, as you have the potential to reach them. You gain support from a key person, which allows you to follow a long-desired path. You've been warned. Some might say I had a few too many blanks on my calendar over the last month, but it was certifiably awesome sauce. I woke up when I wanted to on most afternoons, ate lots of food and just took it easy for the most part. One area in which I was productive was this whole journalism thing. I've gotten my wheels (a friendly reminder that I use a wheelchair) in the door at The Salt Lake Tribune, occasionally writing stories about high school athletes and covering high school basketball games here and there.
