Show enlist and go to col lege says mr claxton P P claxton united states corn com missioner of education sends out the following information which Is of interest to young men who wish to continue their studies at school and at the same time be in position to serve their country many a 1918 school graduate is debating with himself this year shall I 1 go to college or shall I 1 en list at once for military serviced 7 9 the war department has just made it possible to do both it says in effect to the ambitions young american lou serve your country by going to college to make sure that you do not lose thereby the op port unity of serving your country in a direct military capacity you will be asked to join the special V U S army college training units that are to be formed you will be liable for service at a moment s notice but be cause you are worth more to the na tion with your college training than without it you will be expected to stay in college until called by the government the war department departments s announce ment provides that beginning with september 1918 military instruct tion under officers and non commis stoned officers of the army will be provided in eiery institution of col lege grade enrolling tor for tt ti e tion one hundred of more able bod jed students over the age of eighteen the necessary military equipment will be provided by the government there will be created a military training unit in each institution enlistments will be purely volun tary but all students over the age of eighteen will be encouraged to enlist the enlistment will ute the student a member of the army of the united states liable to active duty at the call of the dent it will however be the pol icy of the government not to call the members of the training units to active duty until they have reached the age of 21 unless urgent military necessity compels an earlier call students under eighteen and there tore fore not legally eligible tor for enlist ment will be encouraged to enroll in the training units provision will be made tor for coordinating the re serve officers training corps tern tem which exists in about one third of the collegiate institutions with this broader plan this new policy alms to accod a two told fold object the war de apartment part ment announces first to de celop as a great military outset the large body of young men in the col leges and second to prevent un necessary and wasteful depletion of the colleges through indiscriminate volunteering by offering to the stu dents a definite and immediate mill tary status no nation has made such generous provisions for combined military and college education as has the united states in this new plan the youth who avail themselves of the privilege will be serving their count country rys s lin mediate as well as future needs |
