Show 6 VOICES Monday, September 24, 2007 www.dailyutahchronicle.cottii NICOLE NGUYEN On "Democrats are traitors: Congressmen are treating Petraeus disgracefully" (Tiara C. Fuller, Sept. 17, 2007) Opinion Take a chance on homecoming Nick Bayne ! Posted 9/17/07® I 1:14 AM MST Homecoming week is here! I believe that the significance of homecoming is to see organizations from all around campus come together this one time of year to celebrate and show that we are all true to the U. Organizations including the Alumni Association, Athletics, Crimson Nights, the Associated Students of the University of Utah, the Residence Halls Association, the Bennion Community Service Center, Greek Row, the MUSS and even the Office of Orientation have been preparing all summer for the festivities about to take place. It has been quite amazing to be a part of this tradition and to be able to add my own flavor to some of the student events. This year, Senior Council has made some very exciting changes to complement the long-running traditions. For instance, it has been a tradition for the fraternities and sororities on Greek Row to participate in the house-decorating contest to start off the week. This year, houses on Officer's Circle are participating to spread the spirit at the Residence Halls. The homecoming pep rally has been moved to begin in conjunction with Crimson Nights. In order to make up for the bonfire that has been done in the past, the pep rally will end with fireworks after Coach Whittingham, the football team captains, Crimson Line, cheerleaders and others get the crowd fired up. This event will be a great opportunity to hear how the team plans to stomp the Utah State Aggies. Even Big BudahfromFox 13 will be there to emcee the event. Although the pep rally has been moved from the Residence Halls to the Union, there will still be an exciting event held up at the Residence Halls with a barbecue, live music and ah outdoor movie ("Ocean's 13"). The Residence Hall Association has worked hard to include upper campus in the festivities. Finally, to end the week in style, the homecoming dance will take place for the first time on the evening of the football game at Rice-Eccles Stadium Towers. With the help of about 40 ASUU members, we will all come together to clean up the tower after the game in exchange for letting us hold our dance there. We are holding the dance the night of the game to give the football players a chance to celebrate with the rest of campus after the win. The dance, where students can get dolled up and dance the night away, will be unlike any other event held during the year and will be perfect to attend at the end of the week. While we see all of these exciting events play out, we will be able to tell just how much work Senior Council and the rest of these organizations have put in to make this year's homecoming week a success. If you don't believe me, come see for yourself just how great it will be! \ How dare you? How. Dare. You! •| I'm sorry, but when The Chronicle ' allows Coulterescent tripe of this nature to be published, it gets my goat. Lemming-minded zealots such as , Ms. Fuller are the reason that we \ are watching our brave troops get needlessly slaughtered on a daily basis. They are the reason we are • watching sectarian violence esca; late while our generals tell us that everything in Iraq is hunky-dory. | Well, I'll be damned if I take heed of another piece of carefully calculated ; false optimism. Yes, let's MOVE ON, : and get our troops out of Iraq. On "Muslims discuss views of evolution" (Tina Siu, Sept. 19, 2007) News Jake Van Alstyne Posted 9/19/07 @ 7:16 AM MST I'm sure Islam is a totally legitimate religion, but seriously, it is completely ludicrous to me that in the 21st century, presentations are being given in facilities of an institution of higher (stress higher) learning concerning the illegitimacy of Darwin's notion of evolution, also known as the survival of the fittest. I guess it just illustrates the problem of mixing dogmatism with education. Mr Anonymous Posted 9/17/07 @ 7:15 AM MST I believe you. I think if you read the article, it is pretty plain that she is referring to the Democratic PARTY -- not individual Democrats. Travis Dixon Posted 9/19/07 @ 2:47 PM MST I wasn't the least bit surprised to read about Islam's ignorance and hostility toward evolutionary theory, considering that stoning a rape victim to death is still justified by many Muslims throughout the theocratic Middle East. Please keep your 14th century dogmatic idiocy to yourselves and out of this 21st century institution o'f higher education. When will we finally put an end to giving irrational beliefs a free pass in the name of religious tolerance? M. Smith Posted 9/17/07 @ 6:02 AM MST I'm a Democrat and I don't hate America. ;. That seems VERY odd. Why not disclose the name of the Muslim charity? Were participants and businesses at all concerned about ongoing federal investigations of Muslim "charity" donations funnelled to terrorist organizations (see above hyperlink)? Were the businesses aware they may be listed as co-defendants (or unindicted co-conspirators) in such case trials? Posted 9/14/07® 8:34 AM MST This is really awful.
