Show 1995 | Baby Thunder chairlift opened to much fanfare December 12th. The addition of the Baby Thunder chair increases Historical Society, a non- Snowbird’s vertical to a league leading 3,240 feet. Snowbird’s profit organization is current- addition brings the grand total of lifts to nine. The Baby Thunder lift expands the ski area’s beginner and intermediate terrain. With the addition of Baby Thunder Snowbird now lays claim to more intermediate and novice terrain than most resorts offer in total. Baby Thunder’s vertical rise is 630 ft, and adds an additional thirty acres of new skiable terrain. The lift capacity is 1,200 people per hour, bringing Snowbird’s total to 9,000 © skiers per hour. The grand opening promised, aid. delivered lots of fanfare, including the all important first passenger up the lift: Saint Nick. Not the golfer, but the man who is renowned for his philanthropy to children. Speeches, ribbon cuttings, and fireworks were all part of the days big excitement. | The Baby Thunder chairlift was surrounded with. controversy raised by a few environmental groups, and eventually championed by the forest service. They are welcome to donations of Cottonwood Notes Park City The Park City Mines Company (PCMC) is offering a novel alternative to skiing this year. The PCMC is the holding company that controls the underground mine shafts in the area. They are now extending an elevator ride into the mines. The elevator will leave an above history, stories and photos to prior in 1896. Additional celebrations in the Alta area include the 100 treasures project. This is a State Centennial project that has designated 100 sites of - cultural, scenic, historic: : value around the state. The participants are given a map of the site locations throughout the state. Officials have designed this project so locals and tourist can visit the 100 treasure sites and then check off those that they have visited from the map. Within Alta, one of the original lift towers from the Collins lift is to be found at the entrance to the Gold Miners Daughters parking artifacts or monetary donations. All are tax deductible. An assortment of residents and visitors were in attendance as the Town Council moved through its agenda of regular business. _ Mayor Levitt reported on meetings held downtown or locally in the past month including a meeting with the new Forest Service Supervisor Bernie Weingardt. Mayor Levitt feels he is a hands-on supervisor, interested in maintaining cooperation and communication between the Forest Service and local government agencies like Alta. In addition to the Mayor’s Report, the monthly _ Treasurer’s Report, and the ever popular and amusing _Marshal’s Report, Town Council members heard and approved the annual audit report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1995. Also approved were the budgets of the Cottonwood Improvement District and the South Salt Lake County Mosquito Abatement District. Salt Lake County Commissioner Brent Overson in attendance as a visitor to the meeting, spoke briefly indicating his continued support for the Wasatch-Cache Avalanche Forecast Center, to which the County has made annual contribu- tions for three years. In conclusion, Mayor Levitt and the Town Council presented out-going Alta Justice Court Yadge Steve Stewart with a plaque, thanking him for his twenty-plus years of service to the Alta community. Carntan Kipp, the new Alta Justice Court Judge was then sworn in by Mayor Levitt. He will preside over his first cases December 14 at the Alta Library/Community Center.
