Show Page 12 The Ogden Valley News Volume XXIX Issue VI February 1, 2022 Announcing the 13th Annual American Spirit Awards! By John W. Reynolds Coming in the spring of 2022, Pleasant View, North Ogden, and Ogden Valley residents will have the chance to win cash awards for writing, submitting, then having their essay selected as one of several peer-selected winners! Our need to embrace and honor the American Spirit has never been greater. We’ll announce this spring how you may participate to be honored as a winner in 2022. Past awards have been given to members of law enforcement, youth city councils, Weber High’s student body, essay winners, and other residents of Pleasant View, North Ogden, and Ogden Valley, including Mayor/Major Brent Taylor and Jenny Taylor. The original awards given in 2010 and 2011 went to students in the Weber School District in grades 4 through 12 who wrote about patriotic themes such as freedom, the Constitution, the Federalist Papers, and the Liberty bell. The contest was conducted by the North Ogden Kiwanis Club. More recent essay winners (2012 – 2021) wrote about why the American Spirit is vital in today’s world. Monetary awards have ranged from $50 to $3,000. Our goal this year is to make this the Lucky 13th year with the highest awards yet, so help is needed to fund this project. Our goal is to raise $8,000. If you would like the opportunity to help, please contact me. We would like you to be a part of the 13th Annual American Spirit Project. We will also need people to help coordinate award presentations and to judge participants and essays. Please contact me, John W. Reynolds, at whitebarn28@aol.com. The third quarter is dedicated to the presentation teams (five to ten students). Teams are given a general topic, like “Participation Awards” or “Factory Farming.” Then they research the topic. At each game, they are given a specific question. They have about 20 minutes to prepare a presentation that answers all parts of the question. Finally, in the fourth quarter, students go head-to-head. They start with player one on one team against player one on another other team. They are asked questions similar to those in the first quarter. If neither player can answer correctly, the judge says, “Free for all,” and any player can answer the question. Snowcrest’s team beat Roy Jr. in the playoffs for the national tournament but lost by a heartbreaking three points to Rocky Mountain in the finals. According to their coach Molly Froerer, “We have asked the national office to allow us to compete in the national tournament as runners-up. Although we haven’t heard back from them yet, we are still hopeful.” Froerer continued, “This year, we had 22 team members. Our captains were Rosie Songer, Sophie Riggs, Jake Hone, Sol Stewart, and Aiden Bindrup. They all did an outstanding job in leading our team.” The teams’ coaches are Snowcrest teachers Molly Froerer and Sarah Merrill. Froerer coached the buzzer team while Merrill coached the presentation team. This year’s Snowcrest NAL team includes Reese Ahlstrom, Syrianna Arroyo, Aiden Bindrupt, Liberty Bingham, Zara Caron, Devin Davenport, Sydnie Fonoti, Emily Franzen, Mattie Fuller, Indira Georgi, Luke Hale, Jake Hone, Zach Jenkins, Aspen Olsen, Ben Page, Sophie Riggs, Mason Roylance, Rosie Songer, Truman Songer, Landon Stack, Solomon Stewart, and Ziggy Williams. It’s interesting to note that team members Rosie and Truman Songer and Luke Hale are all first cousins, grandchildren of Pat and Steve Songer of Huntsville. Congratulations, students, on your efforts— including working hard—making it an outstanding and impressive year for Snowcrest’s National Academic League team.
